When im at the range, and im shooting, just doing my thing, sometimes people who arent shooting stand behind and watch other shooters, and sometimes when im done, they ask questions or just want to shoot the bull, they ask what im shooting, what im using, yada yada, and i always offer to let them shoot whatever i brought, but i usually get a wierd look and they dont want to shoot. You think theyre scared to shoot some one elses gun, or am i just weird for offering? 0 -
I've got a 7.5 acre pasture, no animals, and I'm thinking of setting up my own 100 yd. range for sighting in rifles and pistols. Right now I just use a big old oak tree stump for a backstop and wanted some suggestions on making a real backstop for stopping high power rifle rounds. Behind my pasture is my Dad's 90 acres of dense woods, so if I do get a stray it won't go far or hit any houses. I don't want to spend a lot of money on this venture, just want a nice backstop just because I'd feel better.

I just got back from shooting my 10/22 at the shooting range for the first time.[^] The Remington hollowpoint ammo I had missfired 7 times, and jammed twice.[:(]

Anybody that lives here in Penn. have access or own a range that will allow bench shooting at 500+ yds. Even portions of the Hillbilly state(W.Virginia) or north west Maryland. I am bored to death with only being able to shoot 200yds and I would really like to see what my 7mm can do at over 200. It cuts holes at 100 yds and sub 1" at 200y. I really need to see what it can do. I'm kinda like a 16 year old with the first chance at driving dad's camaro. I gotta see what it will do! just to brag to you .22-250 guys, I just chronographed at sierra 100 grain varmiter at 4162 fps, slight over charge but WOW! and here I thought only a .250 would do that!

I get the same thing at the skeet range, people stop by and watch, ask em ifn they want to shoot, they say they dont have gun, so I hand em one, and they get the funniest look on their faces. Some actually shoot, but most just seem dumbfounded at the possibility.. 0 -

They always say "WOW, you're shooting with open sights at that range?" 0 -
I'll usually let a taller child - say about 10 years and up - as well as adults shoot my FAL if they are interested at the range...
I do this 'cause most of the black rifles I see at the range are AR15s, and I see very few FALs. It is nice explaining that most of NATO except the US, Spain, and Germany use them or used them and that a total of 93 countries issued them (and many still do)0 -
they dont want to because they dont want to scratch your gun or be sued if something goes wrong. 0 -
At the shooting range that i grew up shooting at, It was always considered standard proceidure that whenever someone brings a new gun, Everyone else has to shoot it to see how it handles, Shoots, Ect..[:)]
At the new range where i am at now, I am not so sure how that rule would fly. But i am always willing to loan my gun at the range to a Responsible person0 -
Part of socializing at the range. Unless I am doing something SERIOUS (trying to get a newly mounted scope zeroed) will usually offer an interested party a few shots. If an observer has a youngster along, and I have a 22, will offer to let the FUTURE VOTER fire a few rounds from the benchrest. Some become shooters, some stay observers. 0 -
was a time when going to the stock car races determined your next family car. it use to be that way a ranges too. WE were the gun industries BEST salesmen. not any more.[:(] 0 -

At our ranges here in Ky, I am pleased to say that this happens frequently. Most will be eager to let you shoot one of their pistols or whatever they brought. I shot my first nazi marked Luger that way as well as other weapons that I don't have or are curious about. Its a good way to promote the CCW world. Usually for me the big hit at the range is when I bring one of my Coonan .357 autos with me. They never fail to attract a crowd and everybody wants one until I tell them how much they are on the internet. 0 -
I have/shoot some pretty exotic guns and often I can see that "I wish *I* could
shoot that!" look - so I always offer - and if they decline, not the slightest
problem. Most are just naturally curious.

1 i think they are surprised at the hospitality of gun owners as it goes against the stereotype
2 most are intimidated to shoot around experienced shooter for the first few times, and are not sure of the reaction they will get from a total stranger
when i take a new shooter to the range, i do not shoot at all, it will intimidate them, and blow their self confidence all to hell, now second or third time i will shoot to show them what is possible with practice
ive seen new shooters who are actually pretty good think they suck, and new shooters who actually suck think they are good, i let them judge for them self with as much positivity as i can give by example0 -

Less expierenced shooters will often decline offers to shoot someone elses gun do to fear of embarasement. Don't know how the gun works, won't be able to hit the target, the recoil might be more than they are used too, etc.
I don't offer very often and often decline offers because my time at the range is often precious. I have things I want to do and not really enough time for as much practice and load development as I would like.
I know, slow down and smell the roses, life is too short, there is always time to make friends, yada, yada, yada. I got shooting to do.
Young kid asked to shoot my Single Six about a year ago. He his Dad, his brother and his cousin were all shooting semi-auto pistols and ruger 10/22's. His Dad was a little upset at him asking. I did not mind and showed him how to load it, etc. Dad needs to get these kids some single action revolvers and single shot rifles to get them to really practice marksmenship. They are out there just blasting away. I guess Dad does not care, he does pretty good with his 10/22 in .17 cal off the bench and he is out doing something with his kids so hey this is way better than a lot of dads.

that's a great idea. Iv'e got a MKII and a Single Six that ought to fit the bill. But out here in the hinterlands, most of the kids who are at the range have their own guns. Must be a Western thang.0 -

I will aways offer another person to shoot one of my guns
I will always take up another persons offer to shoot one of their guns, it would be rude not too.
At the range one day a new guy showed up with a old Holland & Holland paradox double rifle in 10 bore that he had just bought. I struck up a conversation with him between shots and he asked it I wanted to put a few shots down range. I did and it was a total blast. Later that night I found the add for this gun online, he just bought it for $35,000 and the 2 rounds I fired cost $20 each. He was just a generous old man that wanted to share his love with others.0 -

I liked to watch the cops shoot some of their "toys." [:p]

I do it all the time, I'll be someplace on business and if I have the time I'll stop but the nearest range or gun shop. It's a great way to meet new people, and a perfect way to spend a hour.0 -
Our range in WA, I let others shoot my gun a lot - if they buy ammo, I let them shoot it all up. I often share the fun. I like to help newbies. As Range Officer, I get to do that a lot. It is a lot of fun. 0 -

Tomorrow is my range day with the 4-H, the district is sponsering a fun shoot (skeet and trap) for all the 4-h clubs that can make it. Hernando sportsmans club is donating everything for free for the kids tomorrow..Free clays, free shooting..any child under the age of 17 can participate..they dont have to belong to 4-H 0 -

I was riding my mountain bike through the woods, and I stopped at one of my deer stands ... just doing some checking and opening up a lane for the deer to get through an alder swamp It's not too wet during the season, but it is still tough (at least for a human) to get through. [;)] I saw deer tracks in the snow and droppings all over the place. Looks like my little buck was not the last deer in the woods!. [:D]
Then I went on the the shooting range to shoot the breeze and do a little plinking ... great fun. I usually offer to let people shoot my plinker .22. It is a Marlin Model 39A Golden Mountie! And not everyone knows how much fun it is to shoot a lever gun.0
