So, what's the complaint with Vista?

I bought two new laptops yesterday, one for my wife and one for me.

Granted, we're only 24 hours into Vista, but I'm not seeing what the horror of the thing is. It runs nice, it seems stable, etc.

There are things that are annoying, such as giving permission to have something new run for the first time. But, I have to do that with a decent firewall program anyway. I also am not in love with the START menu, but again, that's just a matter of getting used to it.

So, what gives?

    1) SLOOOOOOOOOOW - Very SLOW, especially with slower processors you find in laptops.
    2) Will not work with many older software programs.
    3) Many printers will not function without an additional patch.
    4) OS unstable at times and stays in limbo for minutes.
    It does have added security which is annoying at best.

    STINKS - They will do away with it and come out with something better.

    Eh. Slow isn't always the processor. Slow is more often times memory. This laptop has the ability to have 4gb of RAM and that's what is installed.

    Understood about the printers. I've got two of them and they're both fairly new. Vista seems to work okay on both of them.

    Most of the software I have is downloaded. In going through my set of discs yesterday, I found five that I actually needed to install. All five loaded with no problems and are a few years old.

    Haven't yet experienced the unstable OS. But, isn't that something that is rather typical in new OS's? I've already downloaded all the "fixes" (yeah, I know, Windows and its fixes).

    some of my older programs wont work with vista, other then this so far so good

    I have it and have had no problems. I've never had my OS "in limbo" and any new printer that you buy is going to work just fine with Vista. My pre-Vista printer works just fine as well. There are times where it's a little bit slow but anyone who knows anything about Vista knows that 1 MB is sufficient but 2 MB+ is ideal. Notebook computer RAM is cheap compared to what it used to be. I can pick up 1 MB RAM for around $30-$35.

    Any new production software is going to be Vista compatable. I always upgrade my software when I buy a new computer anyways. No big deal.

    Vista wants to control EVERYTHING (this is probably the worst/most annoying part)! Vista is a resource hog, better have more than 2gig of RAM if running it on a desktop. Basically all the same complaints that accompanied the XP roll-out.

    It is a very nice operating system for the 95% of pc users who know enough to turn on the computer and check email and surf. If the control factor wasn't such an issue, alot of techies would like it. Vista was written to maximize dual & quad core technology, dual channel ram ( the 64 bit versions above business grade will support up to 16 terabytes of ram).

    That being said, I loaded a copy on a machine and played with it for 3 weeks. I decided it was too annoying to deal with at this time and reloaded XP Pro on that machine. But then again, I just recently upgraded to Internet Explorer 7. It has taken some getting use to, but I'm actually finding it very useful now. Until I have to support Vista or build a mega-machine to capitialize on the inate behaviours of Vista, I will remain in control of my own destiny with XP.

    vista is the best thing that has ever happened to the computing industry, put 2 gigs in it, turn off uac {that annoying control issue} adjust page filling, and it absolutely flies, it is all in the settings, {i admit it is not novice friendly}

    add 2 gig thumb drive set it up for ready boost/super fetch, you'll never look back, btw xp will go the way of 95-98 get on board now or you will regret it later

    I posted about 6 weeks back about looking for a new system and where the best place to buy,I ended up going to tigerdirect and buying one of the refurberb gateway's, 1/2 price of a new one and with a 2yr in house warranty,the only fret I had was it came with Vista Home Premium and I had herard all the horror stories about vista,now granted I do have dual core and 2 gigs and all the other goodies but other than having to find everything again I have not had one problem,lightning fast and I even got it to operate my 6 yr old Lexmark z11 printer after playing with it for about 10 minutes.My wifes favorite game is an old Hoyle card game made for windows 95,I just knew I would never get it to run and load the disk but it loaded it and now runs it so fast my wife complains it deals so fast she has a hard time seeing the cards,,the only thing I have not figured out yet is it wants to take over and control all my pictures,,but I will figure that out in time,,no complaints from me about Vista

    I did a little researching, and talked to a few customers that have pc's with Vista. When I ordered my new work laptop, I got Vista Business. It's an Hp Core 2 Duo with 2 gigs of ram, not an issue period with it. Runs like a champ and none of the slowness issues I hear about, also was able to load Office 2000 without a hitch.

    One of my friends tried to install a wireless card in her laptop, and vista crashed on her. Now it'll only show a black screen, had her restart and everything and it doesn't work. Now HP is sending her a new one.

    what model did she buy?, i haven't seen a new vista hp notebook that doesn't come with built in wireless

    I have Vista with a dual processer. I was having problems with it being slow. Norton was pre-loaded, so I took it off and put AVG on. It now runs like a champ.[:)]

    1st xp works just fine....Vista just isn't Improved enough to warrant the switch.. Bill Gates needs to create some software we can freaking use and quit trying to sell us on a freaking $99.99 Paint Job!!!

    He did it with ME and now Vista....Gates + Vista = Loser!!!

    Yep. While I'm a stockholder, Norton is a resource hog. I used to run it on my computers but took it off.

    Actually, I think I made that part up about it being an HP, to be honest I have no idea what kind she has. And I agree, its strange, but thats what she told me, she was trying to get her wireless card set up and it crashed. She's also not too computer literate, and I had to play tech support via txt msg from thirty miles away, so I have no idea.
