question for you.
first a bit of background from my point of view.
every state here sets its own gun laws...i will give the perspective of my state, tasmania.
hand guns have been stricktly controled australia wide since the 1920`s so i wont bother talking about them here.
in 1993 we had to get a firearms licence to own or buy rifles and shotguns and ammunition.
until then you could own buy or sell anything with a barrel length of over 16 inches, including full auto...there were very few full auto weapons here though, and most of them were owned by collectors who wouldnt fire them anyway.i had some at different times but i always ended up selling them, they were fun but you could burn up a lot of ammo quickly, and ammo has always been expensive here.
when we had to get a gun licence technically you were supposed to register full auto weapons, but i never heard of it being enforced though,other than that anything else was ok to own and buy/sell to anyone who could show you their licence, no need to keep any records as far as i can remember.
the licence cost $30 and we were told it was issued for life!..huh!![:(!]
in `96 when we had a massacre here the stuff hit the fan and we ended up with the laws we have now! [:(!][}:)][V].
now my real question...
i know about your laws that came in in 1934, but when did it become illegal for any u.s. citizen to own full auto wothout going through all the red tape?
do you have to go through an ffl everytime you buy or sell a forearm?
if not is it still legal to buy off anyone? ...an example....i see a lawn sale, and you have a rifle a shotgun and a pistol you want to see, i see them and think they are cheap, can i just give you the money and walk away with them,no questions asked?...
before anyone says it i know with my foreign accent it would be obvious i`m not an american..but still, could you sell LEGALLY to anyone?
this is of course hypothetical...but i havnt read anything here that explains the laws there in regards to this....i`m just curious, i dont intend to go there and buy up every gun in the country and smuggle them back here...we have plenty of illegal ones available here.[:D]
most foreighners would believe it`s open slather in the u.s. wild west style as far as guns are concerned, i jnow better but i often get into arguments with "anti gun" people here who say we dont want our country to go the way america is as far as guns are concerned, my answer is why? if we could be armed for self defence we wouldnt have any where near as much crime as we have now!...i get sworn at a lot[B)]

No. Private individuals can transfer firearms without any paperwork (at least it's that way in my state).

I think face to face transfers are limited to parties who reside in the same state. I also think it would be illegal to transfer to somebody who you know to be prohibited from owning arms (eg a felon), but I don't think there's any requirement to check.

I believe the full-auto ban was 1919.
Forearms aren't regulated at all.
You do not have to go through an FFL if the transactions is between two people who reside in the same state(this might not be the case for all states, but I think its true of most). You do have to make a good faith effort to accertain that the purchaser is legally allowed to own firearms (age and no felonies).
Yes, you could purchase from a lawn sale if you are a resident of that state.
Some states require that private party sales be reported, some do not. Here in Washington state, for rifles or handguns, you do not have to report a sale but there is an optional form for handgun sales.

Since the act to which you refer, it has not been legal to transfer a full-auto weapon to another person, without the "red-tape".
You must also comply with State laws affecting the transaction - as in: you can't transfer full-auto weapons between persons in Kalifornia.

Heres the case for my state, Florida.
Face to Face gun sales are completely legal.
Full Auto weapons can be sold but the transfers must go through a Class 3 Weapons dealer.
There is no waiting period in Florida, if you have a Concealed Weapons Permit.
As far as i know there is no limit on the amount of handguns you can buy in a month.
You must be 21 to buy a handgun, and 18 to buy a rifle.

i was an impulse buyer, if i saw something i liked and i could afford it, i bought it.
i havnt bought a firearm since 1996...i can not be bothered going through all the red tape...apply for a permit to purchase, say what my reason for wanting it is, say exactly the type i want, having to go through a licenced dealer..no private sales at all...go to police station to register it, and if my safe is only designed to hold 3 weapons thats all i can keep in it, having the cops inspect my storage safe every time i get a new weapon...its just too much trouble, which is why it is like it is here now...make it hard to have a gun and most will say the same, just not woirth the hassle, and the cops and politicians cant understand why there is such a big trade in illegal guns here now...
my country is a joke, i sure hope yours dont go down the same road, but it is amazing how many of your "proposed" laws are the same as what ours were like...collusion between your ANTI`S AND OURS ME THINKS![V]0 -

Here in Illinois, Its 18 for a long gun 21 for a handgun.
Every owner is required to have a Firearm owner Identification Card 5.00 charge every 5 years. Need this card to purchace ammo or anything else. I had one when i was 12 known babies to even get one [;)]. Basically you got five bucks and a picture and a clean bill of citizenship you are good to go.0 -

i`m glad you brought it up.
in tasmania the last full blood aborigine died 30 years after european settlement!..that is fact!...a lot were shot, hanger and poisened!..of course it was wrong, but by the laws of the land at that time it was legal!..it would take too long to go into black and white issues here, my finger would drop off but, most of the poor aborigines here died of european diseases, they had no resistance to them...a common cold was deadly to them let alone worse diseases.
believe it or not it has never ever been against the law anywhere in australia for aborigines to own guns!..
why didnt they fight back against the whites ? a lot of them did, but as in america the whites divided and conqured, a tribe was usually friendly with itsd neighbouring tribe, but deadly enemies of the next one over from them, so whites got aborigines from different areas to track down the "TROUBLE MAKING BLACKS" so they could either be rounded up or shot, there were a lot of well documented massacres in our past...and as much as it is denied here, the last official and government sanctioned "BLACK HUNT" took place in the 1950`s..that is a fact of life, there are records to prove it...god knows what happened later in isolated areas that no-one knows about after that time!.
i dont feel guilt about it, why should i, i never harmed an aborigine in my life, but it is part of the history of my country and has to be accepted and spoken about
what part of tassie did you go to when you were here?
i`ve often taken american sailors out shooting when the warships come into hobart for rnr breaks...i hate to think of how many wallaby skins and devils teeth have been smuggled into america over the years[:D]
