Gun Safety Rant

Went to one of the excellent non-chain sporting goods stores here in MI this weekend with the family.
My son and nephew were with me, we were cruising the used long guns. Walked into an aisle to find a youngster
test aiming a rifle at people,immediately followed by his ignorant parent doing the same thing. I lost it!
And this moron has the right to own a weapon.........and buy one for the kid. I realize the kid only knows what he is taught.
I can only pray his father might win a "Darwin" Award someday. The bad thing is When I went off on this idiot,
he still did'nt "get it". Stating he "checked it out". AAARRRRGGGG! I'm Done!!!!![:(][:(][:(][:(]

    And he probably operates a 4000#+ vehicle on the same pubic roads you drive. Scary, isn't it?

    I've been to many of sports shops and guns here in MI and have never seen any thing like that. I guess I don't blame you for blowing your top. Its guys that who cause the shop owner to put all the firearms behind the counter. And then you have to ask to see one Used or New.

    I was at the flea market last summer looking about. I turned around to see some SOB over 1 aisle pointing a rifle at me! I hit the deck and had my hand on my carry gun when I heard the vendor yelling it's OK and telling the SOB to put the rifle down. I had a few harsh words for the jerk concerning his near fateful action. I'm getting pissed just thinking about it.

    Before i moved here, i live in a small town that happened to have one of the best shotgun shooting facilities in the state!

    I spent alot of my time shooting for the fun of it and competing in many events.

    Anyways, the last couple of years i was thier, i spent a lot of my time teaching shooting classes for young to teen aged kids.

    Well, about six months after i moved to were i lived now i found out that two of the kids i had coached were out trapping(both of them armed with loaded 20 ga's) and one of them fell over shooting a softball sized hole clean through the other kids leg( right above the knee).

    That kid literaly came within minutes of dying and by some miracle the doctors were able to save his leg.

    I blamed myself for a while, thinking that i didn't teach enough gun safety, But i am over it know and the kid is doing great and walking again the last time i talked to him.

    So now i realy try to stress gun safety whenever i am teaching someone.

    gun safety was drilled into my head by my Father in the 1950's and 60's. i drilled safety into my son's head in the 80's and 90's.
    it's very easy to understand.

    The poor kid is on the losing end of it all. His father is obviously brain dead. Castration at birth comes to mind. I can always hope the confrontation had an impact on the youngster.[;)]

    Hopefully the father will do something like shoot a hole throught the dash of his own vehicle to force him to treat all arms as thought they were loaded.

    You did right by "going off" on the guy. I think he knows what he was doing was stupid, he just didnt want to admit it in front of his kid.

    For pity's sake- my GRANDDAUGHTER understands- and can quote- "Never point a gun at anything you do not intend to destroy." The really bad news with the bozo that stub encountered is not that he can buy a gun- it is that he had already reproduced!!![:0]

    I hope you mentioned it to the store manager, maybe if the bozo gets booted out of enough places, he will think about what he is teaching his kid.

    I was loud enough to bring two of the gun counter staff running over to control the situation. Once I finished rippin' the guy, I left him with the staff, and took the boys away. They're 12 and I made them pretty uncomfortable.

    Its good the boys saw that un-safe firearms handling is never a good idea, and to never be afraid to bring attention to it. I hope the sales staff reinforced that message for you.

    Yes they did. My son has been shooting since he was 6. He never touched a loaded gun until he understood the rules. We talked about it all the way home.

    in my expirience of idiots like that, they just dont care!!if he saw you doing it he most likely would have gone off at you...but because he obviously thinks he`s crash hot with a firearm, he is safe...and i bet when he was telling people about it later thats exactly what he told them...i can just hear him![:o)]..people like him always seem to have to learn the hard way...and he`ll more than likely end up shooting some poor ba@#%#d with "an empty gun"
