Saw a reference to him that was poofed. In case it was in regard to Benedict Arnold of the Revolutionary War I have a comment. Arnold was probably almost singlehandedly responsible for us defeating the British. He kept them bottled up on the Great Lakes while Washington tried to get an army together. He almost took Canada and if he had been given a little support he would have. He was the victim of jealously and political backstabbing, pretty much like what goes on today. Yes, he made the worse mistake possible by selling out his honor, but remember we didn't really have a country then. Sometimes it seems we don't have much more now. History pretty much is one sided on Arnold. Makes you suspect a lot more of it, huh? We would all be surprised if we knew the whole story. You won't learn it in public schools. I've always tried to find things out for myself instead of believing everything I am told is fact. Even then what you think you have learned could be wrong. Just don't accept everything as fact. Just look at the traitorous acts going on today. Is it worse than Arnold? I think so, after the Constitution and Bill of Rights were written it was clear to everyone what this country was about. Someone has been trying to tear it down ever since, practically before the ink dried. Even though a turncoat, without Arnold we could be bowing to the Queen today. Some people who post here are almost preaching revolution again. Are they traitors, or do they see our country slipping away, undermined by political termites chewing away at the foundation while wrapping themselves in our flag? Right now we can still talk about such things here for anyone to see. If some get their way we may be the last to have this privilege, if the 2nd Amendment goes the 1st will not be far behind. Keep your powder dry.

    For history buffs and others. A movie about Benedict Arnold will be shown Monday night at 9 pm on the A&E (Arts and Entertainment channel). Most people know Benedict Arnold to have been a general and a traitor: but there was more to the man. I've read a bit on him as he is a very distant ancestor (4th cousin, 7 times removed according to by geneaology software.) Before he became a traitor, he was a very important factor in the patriots winning the Revolutionary War especially at Saratoga, the major turning point of the war. However , fortunately his plan to turn over the fort guarding the Hudson highlands at West Point to the British was discoverd before any harm could be done. Kelsey Grammar (Frasier) plays the part of George Washington. Hopefully it will be good movie.

    Thanks for those links CP. I had not seen either of them. I was going on memory of years past in reading about Arnold, and I could not name any particular source. These are great ones to bookmark. Thanks again.

    A brilliant soldier and leader who bowed under the weight of abuse from several superior officers whose competence was borderline at best; a selfish and materialistic b---- of a wife whose sympathies, to the degree she had any (other than to Self), were Loyalist; and so great a degree of ambition and pride that he couldn't accept that life isn't fair and that often the most deserving wind up being the least rewarded -- at least in the short run.

    If not for his performance at Saratoga, first and foremost among many instances of courageous and intelligent leadership, most likely we would be speaking English today [:D]. But -- still a traitor. The best and the worst all rolled into one.

    He wasn't of the same class as the others. That kept him out. He got a raw deal, so he took his ball(s) and became a traitor. Yes, he was a genious

    when we studied the american war of independance at school many years ago we were taught that bebedict arnold was an american traitor who sold out to the british...i wonder if the british are taught anything about him, and if they are i wonder if they consider him a patriot or a traitor? it would be interesting to hear the british view....it was that long ago that i had to study it that i can hardly remember anything else about him at all except he was a traitor.
