AR15 question

My gun was built from different manuf. parts. Rock river lower and I think Colt upper. My question is Both the lower and barrel are marked 5.56mm. Am I correct that this gun is designed to shoot the higher pressure 5.56 but will also shoot the .223 which is what I use. If I could get the 5.56 would it operate better in my rifle that the .223 Thanks (barrel marked C MP 5.56 1/7 HBAR)

Why do so many uppers come without a bolt group, or charging handle?

My dad just got an AR15 (right before the rush). He's looking to me to help him get familiar with it. I'm doing my best but I just don't know much about them since I've never had one.

The mag says 5.56 but the .223 loads and cycles fine when I rack the slide. Do I need different magazines for .223 or not?

What is a P-mag and does it have anything to do with an AR?

Thats all I have for now. I'm sure more will follow. Thanks for any help. Gotta go order a new mag release. This bullet button stuff is crap.

Whats the difference between a M4 and a HBAR configuration?

Both have collapable stocks and 16" barrels.

    Thanks

I notice the piston AR's tend to run $400 to $700 more than the usual direct impingement guns. Thinking about the added materials and machining and such, I don't know if I'm seeing an addition $400 to $700 of materials and work. I wonder if perhaps it is a case of they've got it, and every body wants it, and so the price pops right up.

Is producing a piston gun quite more difficult and expensive and time consuming, enough to justify the significantly higher cost?

hbar = heavy barrel..not cut down for the m203 grenade launcher.in front of the forend/handguard.stocks vary, most 20" barrels come with long buttstocks..m4 collapsible stk..16" bar..Loko

In your opinion which would be the better buy?

Both have 16" barrels. Both have collapable buttstocks. Both have the same equiptment.

Is the HBAR that much heavier (overall weight)?

This is my first AR BTW.

nobody needs the cut down barrel,..unless your getting a m203 launcher..[doubt it]..illegal..I feel like the hbar is more accurate IMHO..here's one I have..just like this..didn't pay this price though..Loko

Thanks LOKO. Perhaps I will get a longer HBAR then. It was either an 18 or 20" in HBAR but with the fixed A1 stock.

didn't make an 18"..musta been 20"..I also have an hbar colt 6601..very accurate for a out of the box AR..I have added a scope.it has a non-removable carry handle.I like the option of having the A3 upper..[the 6721 colt] w/removable carry handle..ie: flattop upper..better cheekweld on the buttstock for use with scopes and other optics..even with collapsible stks..cool..good luck.[8D].Loko

If there is an AWB, The HBar will probably still be legal.

This is the only AR variant that the militant state of MD classifies as a rifle (no waiting period, no background check, etc). If MD does it, must be something to it!

the M4 profile barrel has a "step down" for the grenade launcher and being current military issue, has a 1/7 twist for their 69 gr. ammo. they do not come in the slower 1/12 twist. unless you get an aftermarket pseudo-M4 barrel, it won't have the step down and so it's not really an M4 barrel. underneath the handguard some of them may be thicker than a legitimate M4, I think when I checked out the M4 I had it was actually skinnier under the handguard than the rest of the barrel. I don't kjnow why they do that because I don't think it improves heat dissipation. maybe to make it lighter.

also the feed ramps on an M4 are cut a little deeper and match up with small corresponding cuts there on an M4 receiver. if you put a regular AR barrel on an M4 receiver to assemble an upper, the cuts in the reciever are still there but they no loner extend into those of the AR barrel, which stop short. so you have a little ledge that ammo can nose dive on occasionally. you won't have that problem if you put an M4 barrel on an AR receiver, the "ledge" goes the other way.

here's a picture what I had, M4 barrel and AR reciever.

here's a picture of a 7.62 upper with feed ramp cuts extending into the reciever.

an HBAR has no step down, consequently full length barrel and handguard, and since they were also in production when the military still used 55 gr ammo, you can find them with either 1/7 or 1/12 twist. I think if the barrel is part of an upper that came off a HBAR Match rifle, it may have tighter chamber specs, but I could be wrong.

A true M4 barrel is 14.5 inch length, chrome lined and reduces in diameter just forward of the chamber area. It then steps up to HBAR diameter just to the rear of the front sight base. This first diameter reduction is normally covered by the handguards. It then steps down again for a short distance just forward of the FSB for mounting a grenade launcher system, then steps back up to HBAR diameter out to the flash suppressor mounting area. These are 1/7 twist and can also mount a bayonet.

Several companies market "M4-type" barrels with this same profile but in 14.7 inch. This is done so the addition of a permanently standard length flash suppressor puts it's overall length past the NFA barreled rifle line (16 in.). These are offered in chrome lined or unchromed nd can mount a bayonet.

M4 barrels also have two long feed ramp cuts that extend down into the receiver (visible in buschmaster's pics). This is done for improved feeding of M855 profile rounds during full-auto fire. Beware before mounting an M4 type barrel on a standard receiver that the receiver has to have these corresponding cuts milled in order to feed properly.

Many manufacturers also offer this M4 multi-step profile in 16 in. length with either 1/7 or 1/9 twist. This is really for those who just want the M4 look with that "grenade launcher cut" out in front of the FSB. These can be had in chromed or unchromed but due to the greater distance between the FSB and the flash suppressor a bayonet cannot be mounted.

The HBAR is basically the same diameter from the chamber area to the flash suppressr mounting area. Milspec is 1/7 tiwst and chrome lined, but you'll find these in 1/7, 1/9 or 1/12 rates and chromed or unchromed.

These different profiles have a distinct effect on the balance of the gun. IMHO, in 16 in. carbine length a standard diameter barrel, such as on the SP1, M16 and M16A1, balances best. Unless you're planning on lots of full-auto fire (heat absorption) or long range tack-driving (barrel harmonics), the HBAR profile is just unnecessary weight.

that is just crazy! there are no restrictions on weapons here in vt (besides federal ones), so this is news to me. I don't get why the HBAR vs M4 would make any difference.. huh learn something new everyday..
