Idiots + snow + Seattle = bad times
We got one to four inches of snow in the Seattle area last night. This wouldn't be a big deal in most parts of the country, but here its a disaster. Idiots in SUVs cause a lot of problems. They don't seem to grasp the basic concepts of driving on ice and snow. Its the little things, like breaking, going down a hill, on compact ice and snow. They just jam their foot down on the pedal like they would any other day. I think they believe that the 4X4 decal on their vehicle imbues it with some sort of magical power, like warpaint on horses. It makes me miss Flint, MI just a little bit.
On the whole, this mornings commute was far more intertaining than usual so I guess I should be thankful.

I feel your pain. I moved to the Phoenix area from Seattle almost a year ago. In my time there I have never come across so many idiot drivers....especially when it comes to snow. Holy crap are they a bunch of morons. And the SUV crowd....don\'t get me started on them! At least here in Phoenix we don\'t have to deal with the snow, but still comes with other problems!0 -
I think it happens anywhere it snows....Here in Northern Illinois where people should know better, the soccer moms in their Land Yachts and the fool hardy in their 4WD vehicles think they can drive 60 MPH on icey roads. Been run off the road a couple times by these rookies and morons. 0 -

I'm still trying to figure out after 22 years how people become so stupid over the summer. This weather happens EVERY YEAR in Wisconsin. I mean, come on people! Did you forget that snow + cold weather + Wisconsin = slippery roads and hazardous driving conditions? 0 -

Every fall, first couple snows of the season, and you can count on some of the 4X4s being in the ditch.
For Seattle, that has to be even worse.

Most everyone here knows what kind of car I drive, but for those who don't know, I've got a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. It's a RWD, V8 sedan. I have less trouble driving in winter weather/slippery roads/bad conditions than people with AWD or 4x4s, and a LOT less trouble than people with FWD. I'd rather have a RWD than anything else (except for my 4x4 truck) in the winter up here...at least I know how they'll act if something starts to go wrong, and I know how to REact when they start to act. 0 -
I was stationed in Bremerton, Wa and people abandoned thier vehicles on the road when six inches fell. No salt there either. I loved the area, but the rare times it snowed people could not handle it. The road from Belfair to Bremerton would have dozens of cars in the ditch. 0 -
Most winters we only get one snow fall that will actually stick on the roads. This is either the third or fourth this year though. I'm outside the city, I can't even imagine what thats like, but this whole area is just one steep hill after another. Its pretty treacherous even if you have a good vehicle and know what you're doing.
No salt on the roads and we are supposed to get more snow/rain tonight,that will invariable freeze and make tomorrows commute even more entertaining.0 -
Living in Texas I don't see a terrible lot of ice and snow, but we do get it occasionally. I can't tell you how many times I've seen drivers of big, jacked-up 4x4 pickups barreling down the slick streets grinning at everyone because their 4x4 can handle the snow/ice. Then a light changes and the look of horror appears when they realize that 4x4 helps them go in this weather, but IT DOESN'T HELP THEM STOP!!!! 0 -

Hey, I was in Seattle this weekend, saw the snow, yes a couple of folks act like that but generally, everyone behaved and did good. Was up and around, got to the airport (SEATAC) at 0600 this morning wiht no problems. A lot better than what I'd expect here in the Carolinas. 0 -
One thing about the Seattle Tacoma area is that unless you are in the Valley nothing is flat. 95% of Everything as far as roads go is hilly.
I followed a city truck today and the guy was going 20 mph up a hill and spinning all the way.
If he would have carried more speed at th bottom he would have made it no problem with no spinning.
I don't think it is the Locals that have a problem with the snow, It is all the California Transaplants who have never seen snow and couple that with hills and you have a 3 ring Circus.0 -
Here is NE Wisconsin, almost every morning where there is snow coming down or had been earlier there has been at least 1 multiple vehicle accident, occasionally more than 1, sometimes with a semi mixed in, mostly on the ramps. Sure glad I don't have to drive in that stuff any more. Wonder if there is some kind of contest going on as to who can plow the farthest through the ditch or dig up the most turf or kiss the most vehicles. 0 -

A few years ago I was out on a snowy night, good couple of inches on the roads and more coming down fast. I made a left out onto the main road, and slowly started creeping up to about 15 mph. No plow had come through yet, and the roads were bad.
Sure enough, right as I get onto the main road, this Explorer comes flying by me at about 45 miles an hour. Just tearing along, and I can't believe how fast the person is going.
I slowly round the curve ahead, and there the Explorer is, off the road and through a hedge and into the yard in front of a church, and there's a lady standing there looking at things like, "What the heck just happened? I had it in 4 wheel drive!"
And BTW, I totally disagree that rear wheel drive is best in the snow, especially with a front engine. I'll take a front wheel drive Honda or a big rear wheel drive sedan any day of the week. I drove a Honda through 4 years of college in NW PA and never had a problem. I take my F150 out in the snow and it spins like a top.0 -
