22 bird/rat shot
This was brought up on the experts and I don't want to hijack the thread but here are my questions: We all know that shot does not do well in a rifled barrel. Question: how to overcome this;
Can a smooth sleeve be poked down the barrel and used that way? Or must you grind the rifling off to use with said shot.
Also, If you are going to use a 22 for only rat shot, would it be feasable to just remove the rifling?? Just curious. I have heard.read that Annie Oakley uses a smooth barrel 22 for most of her trick shots.
If said rifle is to be used only to kill rats, it might not be such a bad idea. Tom

Could probably find a old shot out .22 for cheap cheap cheap or if need be find a shot out barrel an put it on a newer action 0 -
why would you bother, certainly your not really talking about filing or sanding the rifleing out of a barrel? where are you shooting that you must shoot birdshot? 0 -
the money and time wasted could be just spent on a cheap rutledge bore 22 on auction or the www.

I would opt for the old .22LR the rifling doesnt make a difference to effect .22 shot. I have an old Romanian training rifle Ive shot both through and Im pleased with the results. 0 -
Pull a Broach through it and you will have a shiny new smooth bore. 0 -

The only problem I know of with shooting lead shot in a .22 is that the barrel may lead up.

I shot thousands of 22lr shot shells through an old Steven's Favorite that had belonged to my grand-dad when he was a kid. When I was growing up lots of pigeons in the barn that needed killing, and you couldn't use a regular 22 unless you wanted to spend the next day patching the holes in the tin roof. Today, that old SF still shoots really really well with regular 22lr. The shot didn't hurt the barrel at all. 0 -
guns were made for exactly what you want yours for. they were smoothbore 22's. remington made them, mossberg made them, winchester made them, euro gun makers still make them. they are all smoothbore shotguns in .22 cal. some are called garden guns. some are collectible now, some can still be had cheap. my M61 winchester can shoot flying skeet targets at 20 yds and break them. look around the web. [;)]

I'm a huge fan of 22 smoothbore rifles. They are highly effective on small backyard and barn pests. A Remington 572-SB is a great house/barn gun. They are VERY safe too. No "wild flying bullets" to worry about. Chipmunks, woodpeckers, sparrows and other small pests fear my 22 smoothbores!! A 9mm shotgun is the next logical step for the backyard! Still safer than a pellet gun. Neither gun does any damage to barn walls or roofs or house siding. We were overrun with little "tweeters" in our barn years ago and we killed hundreds of these little sparrows without damaging a thing in the barn. And, it was great fun!! 0 -
I saw a "air shotgun" on the Outdoor Channel the other day. It was a air gun (barrel break open) that used a 22 caliber shell loaded with shot. Check out Keith Warren's latest show. 0 -
I have a Thompson Center Hawken muzzleloader. I lent it to a guy who used to be my friend.
He returned it two years later and he hadn't cleaned it. The bore was messed up and no good as a rifle any more.
I decided to make it into a shotgun. I have a buddy from college who runs a machine shop. I bought a drill bit at the hardware store, it was about a .530
At the machine shop Gene welded this six inch bit onto a 30 inch 3/8 rod.
He fixed the barrel into this giant green machine. Then he fixed the 36 inch drill bit into the other end of this machine. As the bit began to drill out the bore, there was a little nozzle that squirted machine oil into the barrel.
In 30 minutes I had a smoothbore. Gene didn't charge me because I was a friend, don't know what it would have cost.0 -
