"The Thin Red Line"
It's on right now on the History Channel. Was there EVER a worse war movie? Looks to me like some kind of a drug induced cross between WW-2 history and an Woodstock acid flashback. IMO an INSULT to the brave Marines who fought on Guadal Canal.
From what I understand, the guy who wrote it is from Bartleville Okla. near where I live. If I ever meet him, I'm going to tell him what POS his movie is.

One would think the author/Hollywood would've done a little research. This movie has the Marines armed w/M-1 Rifles & Carbines. Most on GC went in w/1903 Springfields. 0 -

This movie's screenplay was adapted from a ~50 year old novel of the same name by James Jones, who was wounded in action on Guadalcanal. He was also a Pearl Harbor vet and wrote From Here To Eternity not long after the war. Jones wasn't from Oklahoma.
The screenplay adaption for the movie was written in the late 90's by Terrence Mallick, who was also the director. He wasn't a native, but grew up in Oklahoma.
It's a good book, but IMHO Mallick screwed it up royally.0 -
Awful movie. The whole, "Why are we here" crap bothered me. That might have flown in 'nam, or even Korea, where we weren't facing an enemy that attacked our soil- but in WW2, I think most GIs knew why they were there. To kick some Jap butt and get revenge for Pearl Harbor. I won't doubt that many (most) did not WANT to be there, but they knew WHY.
This came out at about the same time as Saving Private Ryan if I recall. What a contrast. SPR was a GREAT film- with the opening scenes being spectacular. TRL on the other hand was worse than a hammed up John Wayne movie.0 -
saw something better yesterday on the History Channel about Guadalcanal.."DOgfights"...about 2 MArine Aviators of the Cactus Airforce. Both became aces in 1 day, flying outnumbered in F4F wildcats, bioth became CMOH winners.
I'll take that anyday over the thin red line0 -

According to both Marine and Army historians the Marines didn't take Guadalcanal, turn it over to the Army and then have to return and rescue them. Once the Marines landed they were there until the island fell.
The Marines were the primary initial force, but were accompanied by a US Army Regiment. After close to a month and a half of fighting these units received further reinforcement from a couple more Army Divisions and 2nd Marines. Those intitial Marine and Army units continued to fight but were eventually pulled back a few months after the reinforcing units arrived. The remaining months of this battle were fought by a combined force of two Army Divisions and one Marine Division.

I hated Thin Red Line and Tigerland as well. Both portrayed the brave veterans of our armed forces in a very unflatering light. 0 -

That was in his keynote address when he accepted the Republican nomination. I loved it & so did the audience but the media keelhauled him for it.0 -

I tried to watch it, but could only watch a few minutes. I would agree it didn't portray our vets in a very good light. Made them look as if the commanders were all crazy and the sympathetic soilders were ashamed of themselves and questioned every order given. IT was just another attempt by a bad director to re-write history in the liberal view. 0 -
if memory serves me correctly the movie wasn't about the Marines but Army replacements after the Marines had been redeployed before the island was secured. and as was said, was almost pushed back into the sea. As with the Marines it was the first invasion of a Jap held island and was a big army cluster fudge. Some Marines were redeployed, and they along with the army succeded in securing the island. And yes the Navy did leave the Marines without support or supplies, because the Head Mop Slinger in charge was afraid the Jap Navy outnumbered the US and didn't want to be responsible for the lose of any any ships.Didn't care about the Marines that were left. 0 -
I liked the movie and have it on DVD, you should watch the whole movie. It shows alot of true grit and compassion. 0
