Brush Version of 30-30

I know that Marlin made the Spikehorn 30-30 with a 16.5" barrel and Winchester made the trapper version. The Spikehorn is no longer in production and cannot be found often and we all know the Trappers if found are outrageous.

Sooooo...has anyone here ever had a standard Marlin cut down? I am seriously considering taking a Marlin 336 to my gunsmith to have it cut to 16.5" and crowned to make it a more compact brush rifle.

    All that to save 3.5 inches in overall length. To each his own, I suppose. But I can't say that I would do it. Must be some pretty thick brush![:D]

    The 336 is not that big in the first place.

    Used to be a RC Marlin. I have one...and it is surprising how that short barrel handles.

    IIRC the Marlin was the 'Marauder'. E-gunparts used to have the barrels for the Marauder in their catalog, but I don't know if they still do. If they do, just order one of them and change it out.

    The spikehorn was their youth version of the 336. Stock was too short for me. I kept busting my nose when the gun would recoil. My back hand would slap me every time! IMHO, the 336 is fine as is. If you wanna cut a 336 down to 16.5 though, go for it! It's your gun. You won't lose much velocity, if any, off the 30-30.

    Thanks guys. Guess I should have prefaced this post that the rifle will be for my wife. She is 5'1" and tends to prefer the youth proportioned rifles over the regular sized. She can shoot anything in our safe, but she does better with a shorter LOP and overall length.

    FWIW my wife *loves* my Ruger 44 carbine. Semi auto (if legal in your state), light, same size as a 10/22 but a 44 hole in the end, no recoil... only downsides I've found is that 1) the wife thinks it is hers and 2) you have to use jacketed bullets only

    My wife already has a 1894 in 44 Mag that has a shorter stock on it. Now she would like a 30-30 in her safe. [:D]

    Yours, too? My wife claimed mine the first time she shot it.

    I did exactly that to an old Marlin 336 A in .30/30 that I picked up for $150 a few years ago from a neighbor. This rifle was a mess-he bought it from some guy who tried to carve a scene into the stock-instead it took chunks out of the wood! It had the long 24" barrel and was missing the hood on the front sight. So I thought to myself this could be a nice project gun as I wanted a .30/30 version of the Guide Guns that Marlin was making. I had my smith cut the barrel to 16 1/2" and put an 11 degree crown on it(I saw that crown on a handgun and liked the style-maybe it's not what crown you want) I also had him put on a new wood forearm and pistol grip style rear stock as both pieces were in bad shape-install sling swivels and finshed it off with a set of Marbles Buckhorn sights like what were on the cowboy rifles. I love the gun now as it is light to pack and looks just like the Guide Guns.
