Winchester shorty

Just visited my local gunshop. He had a new Winchester Hi-wall chambered in 45-70 and the barrel was 16 1/2". The pull was about 12". Limited run to include 38-55 and 30-40 Krag. Called a trapper model. Very interesting, but about $1200, probably more.[8D]

    Well buy it and then go get us a range report on it(With pics) so that the rest of us GB members here know wether or not its worth spending money on[;)][:D]

    Heliman: givette here. Do you know if the hi-wall (the modern ordnance steel one, such as you are refering to) can withstand the pressures of Cor-Bon, or other max .45-70 loads? Thanks, Joe

    Hello Joe,

    Yes, it will. I had a hand in the development of the new Model 1885 Trapper (made by Browning).

    Question: did the improvement involve more than metallurgy? What I mean is, is there any outward appearance change to the casual observer? Thanks, Joe

    I can't answer that questions, as I have not (yet) seen a finished product. I was contacted by Roger Stitt (the head of the Winchester product design group), and he was lookiung for information concerning the original Modle 1885 Carbines. He had first contacted the Cody Firearms Museum, and they referred him to me. After several phone calls and emails, I sent him a an old forend stock to use as a pattern. Hopefully I will be able to get my hands on one of them in the near future.

    I believe Cor-Bon +P .45-70 is okay for hi-walls built after 1900. Check it out, though.

    On second thought, that might have been Buffalo Bore +Ps. But the same could be true for Cor-Bon.

    Bert, my dealer showed the 45-70 to me this past Saturday. He said it was one of the first ones delivered. Quite a piece. He is also expecting the other calibers, also. He is getting 2 of each. Keeping one and selling one.[:)]
