Questions about shipping venison
Our daughter in San Diego has expressed great interest in some of the venison we have in our freezer. Our thought is to find some type of thermal packaging to contain the frozen sausage, ground meat, and steaks we plan to send her and ship it from Texas for overnight delivery.
I'm sure some here have done this before and can impart some experience; do you have any suggestions as to type of packaging, where to get it, who to use (FedEx, etc.), use of dry ice if necessary.

Small ice chest. Place the frozen meat in it with some of those frozen imitation ice packs. Seal it nice and tight.
Ship it overnight with gaurenteed morning delivery. It will still be rock solid frozen when it gets there.0 -

i don't think you can ship dry ice with a common carrier
but you can use the dry ice to really freeze the ice packs, i have never used it on meat, and not sure what reaction the meat would have, you very well may burn it0 -

I'll check the laws governing the shipment of wild game, hadn't thought about that one either.
I wondered about the dry ice burning the meat and you've confirmed my suspicions. However, using the dry ice to deep freeze the ice packets seems like a great idea.0 -

Last year I had some elk shipped to me that very way and it was still solid upon arrival.0 -

I got a package of Omaha Steaks for Christmas.
They were shipped across several states, frozen hard as a rock.
These steaks were in a real bad ass styrofoam cooler, the damn thing is 2 inches thick. I am going to keep this cooler.
The steaks are in vacuum pack plastic. There was a chunk of dry ice in that cooler as well.
The dry ice still weighed about a pound when I got the package so the guys at Omaha Steaks really know their stuff. I know it was dry ice because they had instructions on what to do with the stuff, including, interestingly, DO NOT put the dry ice in your freezer. Also, don't touch it.
It was delivered by UPS.
You know, you might get a styrofoam cooler, and then get another bigger styrofoam cooler that the first one will fit inside, in order to try to get something as thick as what the pros use.
Also you might order some steaks from Omaha Steaks and then reuse their cooler.
Or, send me ten bucks for shipping and I will mail you the Omaha Steaks cooler, I really don't have a use for it.0 -
I would use dry ice. It won't hurt the meat as long is it isn't touching. Pack the ice on top with newspaper or something under it, and over the meat. Dry ice is better than just the gel packs of ice. It is not uncommon, no matter if you pay for overnight deliver or not, for a USPS package to be delayed. Yeah, go figure! But it happens. Not sure about USPS, but with FedEx dry is is a hazardous material, and costs extra to ship with it. 0 -

I went and measured the Omaha Steaks cooler. It is 1 1/2 inches thick. It is made of the cheapo white foam.
This foam is R4 to the inch, so the cooler is R6.
The foam coolers you buy are flimsy. You could make one that is stronger.
Go to Home Depot and buy a sheet of the one inch high density foam, foil backed both sided. That is R8 as I recall.
Cut it up and make a box, seal all the joints with duct tape.
But if you want me to ship you the Omaha Steaks cooler I will.
Did you see the guy over on Ask the Experts, says he has "an original Walker Colt in pristine condition." Wants to sell.

Regarding the Walker Colt, I saw that right after he posted his question. "Pristine Condition", perhaps, but I won't bet my retirement at this point. However, if it is I don't have enough Single Actions and Winchesters to sell and pay for that one Colt!

To all respondents, you have given me great feedback and I would like to thank everyone for the information.
My wife just called and provided some preliminary information from a couple of shipping sources she checked on while out shopping this morning. For the quantity of venison we would probably send it sounds like it will cost about $100+ to ship the venison properly packaged to San Diego.[:0] Yikes, I'm not sure our daughter is worth it. Besides, I limited my deer killing to only one this year, so I need to conserve!!!!![:D] However, old dad will probably ship her some anyway!
