Senate approves eavesdropping legislation
WASHINGTON (AP) -- New Hampshire Senators Judd Gregg and John Sununu voted with most of the Senate to approve new rules for government eavesdropping on phone calls and e-mails.
The plan passed yesterday gives the White House much of the latitude it wanted and granted legal immunity to telecommunications companies that helped eavesdrop after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
President Bush had insisted on the protection, saying it's essential to getting private sector cooperation in spying on foreign terrorists and other targets.
Sununu said the bill authorizes surveillance of potential terrorists and other national security threats overseas, but provides protections for American citizens.
Gregg said the government needs the tools to continue electronic surveillance abroad that has helped disrupt attacks in the United States and overseas.
