Old Shotgun Ammo?

Just posted a box of 2 5/8" 12 ga Western ammo for sale. Never saw 2 5/8" before. Why the unusual length, anyone know for sure.

  Yes, long before there was 2 3/4" 12 gauge, there was 2 5/8". many of the before 1900 guns are 2 5/8", and even some after. Another one to look for is the early 16 gauge shotguns. A lot of them were 2 9/16, before the advent of the 2 3/4". Some manufactures are now making black powder equivilent loads for those lengths, for those who use them in Cowboy Action.
