The origins of PIZZA
I can't vouch for the authenticity of this version, but it's one of the origin historys I've heard.
Back in the days when Rome was in the process of conquering the known world, the Roman Legions often had to forage, scrounge and seize provisions for the army.
One day the only provisions they could come up with was wheat flour, cheese and tomatoes. The general said they could make a dough with the flour and put it on their round shields. Then make a paste out of the tomatoes and cover the dough. Then cut the cheese into very small pieces and put that over the tomato paste and cook the whole thing over open fires.
The Centurion (Roman Legion version of Chief Warrant Officer) said "That seems like an awful lot of trouble. Why don't we just send out for pizza?"

Thank God for the Romans then,.....one of my favorites!
I could eat it several times a week.
Only the real NY style though,......no fast food pies for me![xx(]0 -
the story is not Kosher, not by a long shot...the tomato is a new world plant [B)]
they did have a "proto-pizza" but no tomato sauce, IIRC the crust was brushed with olive oil and then they put a herbs/spices on it, then the cheese (which ancient people did know) and other ingredients were applied0 -

I've always enjoyed the historic (myths/western folk lore?) origins of 'chop suey,' in America.
Funny how that stuff gets passed down from generation to generation.

I also heard it was Roman BUT it should go like this:
When Galileo went to the tower at Pizza to prove the constant acceleration of gravity , he used a ball of dough in contrast to a cannon ball . Dropped on the marble plaza below , the dough went spalt as it hit the stone making a circular object. The cannon ball striking at the same time , made a crack in the marble. Galileo's assitant , Marguerita, came to the rescue by quickly baking the dough with freah basil and cheese to give to the very upset caretaker of the tower thus creating the first "Margurita cheese and basil bread from Pizza" which has been summarily shortened to Margurita Pizza to fit on a menu.

Yep,.....South Florida is, Dade and Broward county originally.
Many of them are moving up towards the central part of the state to escape the Cubans, Mexicans, Jamaicans, and Brazilians,......I may have left out an ethnic group![:D]

I'm considered a "native" being as I have lived in Florida since I was about 3.5 years old,.......that is when I built my first house![:D] Joke,..... I was moved to Florida by my mother.
I moved to Ocala around 1990, from W. Palm Beach,.....lived in Broward county prior to that.
I am about 1.5 hours North of Orlando, and 40 minutes south of Gainesville,.......so far it is still nice up here.

You are correct from my learnings on the subject.
I used to have some Sicilian friends that lived in Toronto,......spent several months with them over history.
They had the old Italian "momma" that spent all day preparing for Sunday dinner.
Everything you could imagine was there, from home dried pasta, to what they considered "pizza".
My understanding is it is basically "garbage" to them,......something made out of the leftovers, and far simpler than what we consider a "pie".
I am referring to a "pizza" pie, and nothing else, so don't poof the thread![:D]0 -
Some Italian chefs stopped by Tulsa and compaired pizzas.
The said, a pizza is smaller than 12" and is milder (I read 'blander') than American pizza.0 -

May have started in Italy but they didn't have tomatoes until about 16th century when someone made it back from the Americas. So it wasn't pizza as we know it. Just some slop on a piece of flat bread. By the way, spaghetti originated in China, so foods are sometimes combinations and alterations from different cultures and not necessarily the dominion of any. 0 -

The Tomato was considered poisonous in Italy because of its red color, some starving peasants ate them and found out they were not deadly, but I've read that the pizza originated from either Rome or China 0 -

Those starving peasents were the ones that came with the Spanish to the New World. Pizza as we know it comes from New York along with real chesse cake, which no one seems to know how to make anymore(farmers/potchesse not cream chesse). Italian pizza is basically flat bread with leftovers on it. 0 -
Went to one of the Famous Ray's or Rays or whatever in NY expecting it to be the heaven of all pizza. I've had frozen pizzas better than those 0
