Ah, the flea market mentality....
Just after composing the long babble about meds, guns, and related issues, a friend of mine called to brag on the latest liquidation special he'd sent off for. It came today: a Barska scope with crosshair illumination, and a clamp-on muzzle brake for the Mosin-Nagant he intends to mount the scope on.
Correction: that he will want me to mount the scope on.
Fine and well. Liking to dot my "i"s and cross my "t"s when it comes to doing work on other people's guns, though, I ventured to suggest that the process of turning down the bolt handle on the Mosin might be different, more involved, less doable, than on a Mauser. I've done a few Mausers. I haven't ever even taken a close look at a Mosin, let alone 'smithed one. So, I suggested that, should turning down the bolt handle be a tricky (too tricky) process, a long-eye-relief scope might be the answer. AND, I suggested that, in that case, since I have a number of Mausers that will eventually need scopes or peep sights, and not enough of either type of sight to go around, we might swap -- me buy a decent long-eye-relief scope and install it on his gun, taking his Barska in trade and payment for labor both.
You could hear the calculation in the silence that followed. Finally: "Well, I give forty dollar (not dollars; dollar) for this scope on clearance. I couldn't take one for it that wasn't a whole lot more expensive, coming out of a store. Have to price what they go for, retail...."
And I said, "Never mind. I'm too busy with the new house to mess with it for quite awhile, anyway." That made things awkward, and we cut the conversation off after a couple more minutes. I have a bad cold and I'm not in the friggin' mood for being treated like any sort of deal I might suggest has got an angle to it [:(!].
WTH is it with people like this? Don't say poverty. I'm poor and have been so my entire life. The fact that I'm NOT stingy means I'll probably die poor. No problem with that, but I do have a problem with the money-grubbing sort of person who suspects everyone of trying to pull one over on him. My buddy will call, probably tomorrow, the next day at the latest, and grovel, knowing he pissed me off, and things will be cool then -- but his instinctive suspicion of everyone when money's involved will aggravate me until the day one of us dies.
Grrr. Rant over. I should go to bed. I won't, but I should.
