Wal-Mart Gun Sales on the way OUT?
Yesterday I got a sure indication that the days of Wal-Mart selling guns is coming to an end.
UPS delivered a box of Remington 2008 catalogs to my shop. These were shipped FROM Remington!
I have never received anything before from Remington as they overlooked small shops and catered to Wal-Mart. I really hope that they don't expect me to order any raggedy assed EXPRESS shotguns. You know, the WM specials that rust if you take them out of an air-conditioned room.
Seldom do people note that while American gunmakers publicly decried the 1968 Gun Control Act, secretly they rubbed their hands in fiendish glee. By shutting off imported firearms, they directly profitted. The cheap military surplus weapons used to hunt with now had to become Remington, Winchester, and Ruger.
To all the gunmakers that crapped on small independent shops for the sake of boxcar lot sales, now it's our turn to crap on you.

Of course, he'll also custom-order anything you can put half down on. And his prices are as competitive. And he's a half a block away from my office. But now, I'm just braggin'.
If i need help instaling an aftermarket part, i can go to my gun guy, but if i needed some one to smooth a trigger pull, or cut and crown a barrel, i have no idea where to go. My local gun guy isnt a gunsmith. Helluva nice guy though, love to chat with him.0 -
Local wal mart here in KY sells the crap out of guns. I'm not there biggest fan but am still looking at that rem 700 camo stock for 464 bucks. Hard to beat that. And yes, it is a Rem. 700. Not a 710 or 770. Even comes with a crappy scope. 0 -
PBJ...they are the EXACT same gun that any FFL holder can get. Stock numbers match across the board. Very few things are made STRICTLY for WM. One company that did for a while was Ruger with their 10-22s...several models were made only for WM.
One thing to remember...WM does not buy directly from Remington or Marlin or any other manufacturer. They buy through distributors just like any other dealer. Their main suppliers are Sports South and Jerrys. My neice works at the WM Distribution Center in Clarksville Arkansas and the firearms are ordered from those two distributors for Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Remingtons have gotten a bad reputation lately because their Quality Control has gone down hill. That is why alot of us are worried about them acquiring Marlin...I would hate to see Marlin firearms become as sloppy as some of the Remingtons.0 -

The only thing I can tell you is what I've seen with my own eyes. The 870 Expresses bought from WM that come in for pawn will rust in a day. Even though the finish looks fine, like dark parkerizing, surface rust appears overnight in some cases. The shotguns also have a clunkly feel to the action and the wood looks cloned from plastic. No grain or figure at all.
LesWVa actually captured my thoughts about this whole thread, Wal-Mart is only a symptom. My real bugaboo is with Remington and the rest of the companies that disassociate themselves from the gun control issue. What's the difference between a 7400 and an AR15? Yet we never hear Ruger, Remington, or any other big "sporting gun" company chiming in. Anyone remember Zumo or Jerko or whatever that old shotgun farts name was that lost his job and TV show because of his stupid "assault weapon" remark?0 -

Ruger was the manufacturer I was referring to earlier. I have no idea why they would drag their proven name through the mud, by producing sub-quality guns. By that I mean the blem stocks, off-skew sights, missing pins, etc. The only answer is trying to meet production #'s beyond the norm. Someone fell asleep in the sales meeting.[V]0 -
i bet all the small dealers wouldnt tell someone coming into their shop that wanted to buy a remington or ruger they are junk guns. 0 -
stub...what is sad is that Ruger made a 10-22 for WM years ago that I bought. No other dealer had them at the time.
It was the International with the Mannlicher stock, a greenish laminated color with a stainless receiver and barrel. SHARP looking and shot very well. I ended up giving it to my nephew and he has been using it since then to hunt squirrels and rabbits with.
Lately Ruger and Remingtons QC have not been great. What is really sad??? The rancher I help out sometimes bought a Mossberg ATR 100 for keeping on the tractor for coyotes and bobcats. $200 cheaper than a Remington and it shoots as good as his 700 SPS.0 -

Walmart would not have gotten away with what they have over the years if it were not for that other inbred family from Arkansas. Cant forget about how slick Willy Clinton help kill the American economy by signing the NAFTA.. Wonder what kind of a kick back he got from Walmart for his signature on that piece of paper? Had to be a good one. Since Walmart is the only one that has profited from the NAFTA deal here in the US.
Like I have said before. I have saw first hand how Walmart did a few manufactures in NC that ended up putting thousands of people out of work. Funny thing is. The only people that think Walmart is the greatest place to shop are the ones that have never lost there job or saw their entire towns economies destroyed due to Walmarts practice of bring it home to America.

I believe that there is a significant issue you all are missing.
It is not a retailer that drives quality and prices down....IT IS THE RETAIL CUSTOMER. We as a nation demand lower prices on things we need so we can have more $ to buy the things we WANT. GOT TO HAVE MORE THAN OUR NEIGHBORS AND ALL THAT STUFF WE SEE ON TV TO BE HAPPY.
If it did not sell WalMart would not carry it. Just because that I cannot get a Rem 870 Express at WM for $200 does not mean I will pay $300+ for it at the local shop.
I work at a US textile manufacturer. Our challenge is not the retailer it is the consumer. GOT TO HAVE IT CHEAPER is the demand of American consumers. They typically don't care about quality. That is why China has done so well. Low quality and Low price.
Do you guys always pay top dollar for high quality ammo.......Tell the truth....
If we as a country demanded a level of quality and were willing to pay a reasonable price for it we would not be hearing that "giant sucking sound"

Wal-Mart is notorious for demanding low prices from manufacturers, and in order to meet the price they get a model that contains cheap short-cuts -- not identical to the one you get from a small shop. I have heard this of chainsaws and tools, and would not be surprised if it was true of firearms. WMs are full of cheap junk. I'm surprised they don't sell Norincos -- everything else except the groceries comes from China.
I have a Grand Auto shotgun in the closet. A sad reminder of a time when Sears, Penneys, and a variety of other outlets in your town sold guns under their own name. I also remember the wall of handguns in the Wal-Mart 20 years ago -- back when they proudly claimed everything was made in the USA. Screw 'em.0 -
I am sick of hearing about Wal-Mart.
I do not shop ther anymore and have not missed the extra I have spent.
Just quit going there.Its like going to a Chinese flea market anyway.
The only reason they are still around is they have all of us dumb Americans believing we will go broke if we do not shop there.
People who shop there are only hurting the USA.
If we will demand MADE IN AMERICA and quit shopping at Wal-Mart then thing will be made in America again.

A lot of what you will find at Walmart (and any major retailer) is that they will have exclusive pack sizes. I used to work for one of the largest consumer companies in the world and what you will find is that Walmart, Costco, Sam's, Kmart, etc. all way exclusive packaging. So we would sell a 1 gallon bottle of laundry detergent to one place. The competition immediately wants a 2x1gal casepack exclusive to them, but it's the same 1 gal bottle inside with the same detergent. Then another retailer will want 2 x .5 gallon packsizes of the exact same detergent.
While basically they are the same, there are minor variations that create a different SKU#. As far as I know the only exclusive gun carried by Walmart was the Wally World Special Ruger 10/22. It had a better stock than the standard and a 20in barrel but the receiver and everything else that matters was identical.0
