Storm shelter radio and light system

Hopefully, I will get my storm shelter installed in the next few weeks. I suppose the installer will have their line of stuff power at great expence. I see the shelter only being used for a couple of hours at a time and very sporatically. I am sort of leaning toward the hand rotated generator type of power.

How much trouble is it and all that. I'm sure a 12v car battery would fill the bill but it would have to have a trickle charger to keep it fully charged. At most, I think I (we) would only use it till a front blew over. Naturally, we would want a radio for weather alerts.

Do any of you have a shelter and how do you power it? Thanks, Tom

PS. the one I have picked out will hold 12 people or 6 people and 12 cases of beer. Or just me and all the beer I can drink in a week or so!! T

    If all you need is lights and a radio; get one of those hand-crank radios and a sack of batteries for your Surefire. Spend the rest on paper towels!
    Remember that a car battery will outgas during charging, and Hydrogen is one of the gases. No Open Flames.

    Yeah just get a hand cranked radio. I have one, it works great. Crank for 30 seconds, it runs for 30 minutes.
    I used it for my primary radio for a year, and then I read that in about 2,000 cranks it would conk out. I figured that I had given it about 1,000 cranks so I put it in storage to save for an emergency, and now use a battery powered radio around the house.

    RV's use 2 6v golf cart batterys.

    One car battery would work just fine. You'll only need to use it for an hour or so. Just recharge it once or twice a year.
