Washington, DC - If you're a low-tech TV owner who has a set of rabbit ears on top of your set or an old-style antenna sitting on your roof, listen up.
Starting with the New Year, you will be able to obtain $40 coupons from the government to help you make the transition into digital broadcasting.
The coupons will help pay for special converter boxes that will convert digital signals to old-style analog signals.
Beginning February 18th, 2009, anyone who does not own a digital set and still gets their programming using over-the-air antennas will no longer receive a picture. That's the day the television industry completes its transition to digital broadcasting.
The converter boxes are expected to cost between $50 and $70. Viewers who have satellite or cable service won't need a box.
To request a coupon, consumers can apply online at www.dtv2009.gov. The government also has set up a 24-hour hotline to take requests, 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009).

I use an antenna to get local channels in HD (at least on the programs that are offered in HD). They aren't offered on my satellite package, (or on the cable company's package) but you can use an antenna to get them over the air. In big markets, they come over satellite or cable. Oh well. Just part of living in the sticks. Not bad though, as I was able to cancel my locals from my satellite provider. 0 -

Well then, pick up the phone....call them..the number is provided..and it wont cost a thing but a minute of your time....THe story was on the local news and I copied it from their web page...and by the way, its gov't website, so you actually expect it to have info on it? there is a lot of info on the site IF you read it..

I bought a cheap 27 inch digital awhile back..use antenna.
Lo and behold...I found that most all channels have MULTIPLE channels...6 has 6.01,6.02, 6.03, ect.
Channel 11 has about 5 or 6 channels. sometimes same programs, sometimes different.
Generally, the base channel is analog.
Well, every time I flip thru 8..the base channel is speaking SPANISH. Gives me vertigo...like I have been flipped several hundred miles South...0 -
GOSH!had no idea,i live back in the sticks,we had satellite for a few years,nobody really watched it so we went back to the local channels.When i go into Circuit City,Best Buy ,the electronics are amazing.I like the simple things though,dont have time fer all these electronic gadgets,sept the puter. 0 -

They have been pushing that for a year now here in CA. Funny the US is still about 10 years behind the European HD broadcasting std. as few of my television broadcast engineering buddy's say. 0 -

I have one of those little portable hand held TVs. I guess this means that it will be worthless. It's not really much loss since I have rarely used it & I have had it for quite a few years. 0 -

TV is the work of Satan. I've been saying this all of my life, and, I'm not even sure that I believe in Satan anymore. Try not watching it for a few days or weeks. When you start watching again you might realize what a complete waste of time it is. 0 -
I went dish probably 15yrs. ago.
Definately don't miss those days of climbing the tree to turn
