Smokers Only
Gun guys and gals are a pretty independent bunch it seems to me. Some choose to use tobacco whether cigars, cigarettes or pipes or smokeless. That's yours and my decision. Personally I enjoy all of it from time to time. That's no ones business but mine. One thing I dislike is non-smokers holier-than-thou attitude. I will not offend anyone with my smokes if I can help it and I don't smoke where it's not allowed, even though a lot of people offend me with their smell or chewing gum or loud and vulgar talk, cell phones or whatever. People who smoke have been screwed unmercifully by the PC crowds, and the taxes-r-us government. Almost like gun owners. Anything the commie crowd shuns or is afraid of is fair game to restrict and tax to death. "I'd like to spit tobacco juice in that dude's eyes, and shoot him with my old .45" Hank, Jr.
So I've ranted on for no apparent reason. Just wondering if there are any folks here who smoke that roll their own like me. I have a Supermatic Premier machine and my sticks are as good as factory made. My problem now is my favorite tobacco has been screwed up. I was using Stokkebye McClintock, and evidently they sold that brand. It formerly came from Denmark and was a fine, mild sweet smelling blend. What I just bought is harsh and dry, I didn't notice at first the package was different. It is now a different co. and is made in POLAND. It is lousy stuff. Any rollers out there that can recommend something good? Or anyone want to discuss rolling your own smokes? I would like to hear from you.

I used to roll my own. I used Borkum Riff pipe tobacco, whiskey flavored. Damn that was a good cigarette, and strong, too.
I had to give it up, I got to where I was smoking too many of them.0 -
Well, I'm trying to quit but to the extent that I fail at that endeavor, I do so with hand-rolled cigarettes (the rolling machine seemed too much of a PITA to me....80% of my handrolls are as good as factory, 10% so-so, and 10% miserable failures--those usually when I'm trying to roll one up while walking).
I use Drum tobacco. It's usually stale, dry and nasty from the pouch. The cans are sealed better and (with one exception) have always been fresh, appropriately moist and delicious. I know Drum changed hands several years ago too, and people who used the old kind tend not to like the new kind. I guess I got in after that switcheroo so I never knew what I was missing.
I started rolling my own when I was unemployed for a period of months and couldn't afford the tax on factory cigarettes. Once I got a job again I found that the factory smokes tasted like azz.0 -

I smoke so does my wife and like you we respect others who do not.
One thing that grabs my butt just happened the other day. I was in line at grocery and a busy body lady commented on the soda I had on the checkout.
"that soda has the most sugar of any did you know that" "how do you stay so skinny drinking that"
Then I asked the cashier for 2 cartons of smokes for the wife and I.
Miss busy body" No wonder you are so skinny smoking and soda" "do you know that they are the worst brand for you"
After her first comment about soda I said nothing. With her second comment I just told her "I don't want to hear it" and paid for my things and left.
If they do not like smoking,high sugar content soda,booze or whatever-keep it to themselves and do not preach to me.0 -
Thanks for the replies, guys, and blackroses many thanks to you. Guess there aren't a lot of ryo guys on here. It is a growing trend though and bulk tobacco is being taxed but not quite as much as finished cigarettes. It is a growing practice though and soon will catch the money grubbing taxers and they will find some way to tax us to extinction again. If I can't find some decent tobacco it won't matter anyhow. 0 -
Samson is my tobacco of choice. I don't use a rollin'n machine though, I use my fingers. Have for 20 years. And it looks like a cigarette when I'm done, not a joint. I don't really care for tailor made smokes. They're dry, harsh, and taste like ka-ka.[xx(]
Bali Shag is also pretty good tobacco. Drum works if it's all I can find.

I used to roll my own but got tired of hunting for the tobacco that I liked. I rolled Drum handrolling tobacco. It's about the only handrolling tobacco I could stand. I tried that Bugler crap but couldn't stomach it. Black Death was actually a real good handrolling tobacco very similar to Drum. I loved opening that pouch of moist Drum and taking a good deep wiff. It smelled GOOD. I think you get in a rut. I had to quit for MP school and I got out of my ryo ritual.
I tapped into the Borkum Riff as well. Good flavor but a little stiff.0 -

I quit 76 days ago (Dec. 1) but you won't hear me going" Holier than Thou" about it. I'll probably start again when I get stressed out. I was more a pipe/cigar guy which they say is easier to quit because it takes 10 minutes to get the nicotine in the system. Cigarettes are almost instantaneous. I'll still have a rough time in squirrel season since I usually start opening day with a pack of regular Camel's in my pocket. Kind of a ritual since 1968. We'll see. 0 -
A person has the right to smoke if they wish. Their right to pollut the air ends when its my air they are polluting..If you are going to smoke keep your distance..
I used to smoke, now that I have been clean for 8 years, a smoker gets next to me and the STINK.. I mean the smell like a wet ashtray.
I have smokers that get right in your space at the range puffing away, I dont say a thing, I just move away from them , it seems that most smokers dont respect the fact that some of us dont want their stink and smoke in our face..

Find a local smoke shop, they should be able to help you.
That said, I like Drum, and the American Spirit stuff (no additives). You can also get all sorts of shags, etc. from a "real" smoke shop (not a head shop, although they sometimes have some to seem legit, but they don't sell a lot of it so it won't be fresh...)0 -
My one bad habit. When its cold outside. I love to have a cigar and a Crown Royal outside. Relaxing on my dad's balcony watching cars drive by.

Look up RYO Magazine online. Lots of info there for tobacco and machines. I use a Supermatic Premier which is considered about top of the line, but there are others that work well. There is even a new one out that is electronic. Prices vary on machines. I paid about $50 for mine but that was several years ago. I haven't had any problems with it. You can also find them on auction websites but I have seen them cheaper at sites that sell RYO stuff. It's really "injecting" as you buy premade tubes with filters. Usually run about $2 for 200. So with a good tobacco and tubes you can make a carton amount for around $8-9. If you search for "roll your own" or "stuff your own" or "cigarette machines" you will get a lot of hits to check out.

I've thought about rolling my own at home, but I've read too many horror stories about the tax collectors swooping down and presenting tax bills for thousands of dollars to unsuspecting Internet shoppers. The tax man can't stand to see an untapped source of revenue and like to amend existing tax laws to grab more loot from previously exempt sources. That's about the only thing that keeps me from trying it. 0 -

It's not universal - yet - but it's being tried out here and there. It may only apply to manufactured cigarettes, but I'm still leery of getting in the tax man's sights any more than I already am. When I pay sales tax locally I know about it. When I buy stuff online I expect it to be tax exempt, and can't deal with a big tax bill months or years down the road.

Utah Goes After Internet Tobacco Taxes
The state of Utah is mailing notices to 250 residents who purchased cigarettes on the Internet, demanding payment of more than $130,000 in sales tax, according to a report in the Deseret News.
"If you're buying over the Internet, we are going to be assessing you," said Rod Marrelli, executive director of the Utah State Tax Commission. "You're being reported -- now pay up the tax. It's only fair to the other people who are buying them at the grocery store and paying the tax."
The commission recently gathered lists of purchasers from the online stores that sold the cigarettes. Buyers are being told to pay the state's 69.5-cent tax plus a 10-percent penalty for failing to pay the tax upon purchase. First-time offenders, however, can have the penalty waived.
To track down online buyers, states have increasingly been taking advantage of a federal law that requires companies that ship cigarettes across state borders to give buyers' names and addresses to state tax agencies. Marrelli said some buyers were purchasing hundreds of packs of cigarettes, suggesting that they may not be for personal use.0 -

I smoke Camel Turkish Golds. Not a bad cigarette, very smooth and mellow when fresh. As for the smell on my close and person, the jet fuel, hydraulic fluid, and turbine engine oil I'm constantly covered in to the point people think I swim in it pretty much covers up any trace of the smoke smell. I'll most likely die as a result of a lot of other cancers before lung cancer has a chance to take effect. 0 -

I know what you mean. My agency has a policy that we cannnot smoke on company property, nor in company vehicles. So fine, I'll take my own vehicle, and I'll walk around the block to smoke. Then it's switched to you cannot smoke on company time EVEN if you are in your own vehicle. You can smoke on your lunch, as long as it is not on company property, nor in a comany vehicle.
So, yesterday, I'm out in the field in a company vehicle (basically because the company only pays .21 per mile on your milage on personal vehicles), it's lunch, and I want a cigarette. As it is a small county, and I am paranoid that another company person will see me and report me, I don't dare stop in any town, or alongside any main roads to get out and have a smoke. I find myself scoping out secluded locations where I can park the car, get out and smoke.
Holy crap! I'm a 42 year old woman, a taxpayer with kids and a morgage! Why am I acting like a freaked out, paranoid 16 year old!0 -
I have to tell this story. I too am a smoker. I do not try to force on anyone that is not, I will not smoke in someon's car that does not smoke.
The other day a friend of mine and myself stopped at the local mini mart to grab something to drink and he needed a pack smokes. There was an older gentlemen in there in front of the beer looking over his choices (this was at 10am on a Sat morn) I do not drink that much but that was his buisness not mine. We grabbed a couple of pepsi's out of the cooler and proceeded to the counter. When we got up there the gentlemen got in line behind us with his beer. My friend asked for pack of smokes and the guy with the beer said " if anyone had any sense they wouldn't buy those things". Without hesitation I spun around and said. " I am sure that they wouldn't buying beer at 10am either. Moral of the story - If you live in a glass house, don't throw rocks0 -

In Iowa, our idiot tax and spend Governor raised the tax on all tobacco products last year $1.00 per pack. Now he wants to follow Illinois law and ban smoking in all businesses in Iowa to include bars. To me this is totally wrong telling a business owner what they can do in their own business. Instead of banning smoking in businesses, why not leave the choice up to the business owners, and just require them to post a sign on the door as to whether the business is smoke free or not. Just another way to gain revenue, and gives law enforcement something else to spend time on, besides solving actual crimes. 0
