Well, they topped 40 billion in profits last year and the media is having a field day with the story. They must be a bad company for making so much money while fuel is so expensive. They have to be putting the hooks to the workin' man!!!!!
They should be shut down!!!!!! Sure go ahead. We don't NEED them. They aren't the largest employer in my area (next to the state). Heck, put 3500 employees out on the street along with about 5000 contractors. The businesses here selling them food, office supplies, valves, pipe, steel, dirt, gravel, and toilet paper don't need them. The transportation companies (barges, trucks, trains, and pipelines) don't need there business. The smaller plants don't need their feedstock, they can just go to the phone book and find another supplier.
It really is their fault that fuel prices are so high. They must have come up with the idea that oil is a commodity traded on the open market. It's their fault that China and India are experiencing economic booms and need fuel to keep it going. Shoot, they make what? 10 to 15 cents on a gallon of gas or diesel. The station owner gets about 5 cents. Heck the gubmint is the real winner, they are making about 40 cents in local taxes and 30 cents federal in taxes. Do you see something wrong here?
It's their fault that overbearing enviromental laws, lawyers, and ignorant people with the Not In My Backyard (are you listening Florida, california, Mass., New york, and Washington?) mentality stop them from drilling or building new refineries to meet regional needs. So what if America has vast Natural Gas deposits off all it coast? We'll just keep sucking it from Louisiana and Texas and pump it thousands of miles so a tofu eater in New Hampshire can boil water for his Earl Gray. Why not sink a few wells off the east coast to fuel the region? It's a safe, clean, and efficient way to ease the energy crisis that we are facing. I should know better than to expect America to have a collective common sense.

When you average the profits and losses for Exxon over the last 20 years you will get a much clearer picture. However, isnt it curious that democrats have been in power for almost 2 years now and they havent done anything with the oil companies ? 0 -

My stocks have reflected no major profits for the production sector of my portfolio, but the incarceration sector has gone way up!
I posted a few weeks ago about the fact that none of the new refineries are being built, that the only larger ships to haul fuel were being made in China, and that there are no plans for the Governator to single-handedly drill, pump, and refine the 25 million or so barrels EACH DAY that Kalifornia wastes in gridlocked traffic jams.0 -

You do have a good point Steve. But to profit $40,000,000,000? While the working man has to give up some things in order to pay for his feul expense? Or how about the elderly who are on a limited income who have to give up medicine because they don't have enough money to pay for it? Just my .02 0 -

The company spent about $2.5 billion on cleanup costs and then paid out over $300 million to the people and businesses which claimed damages early on. After those people were paid a group of lawyers smelled money and rounded up 30,000 folks for a class action lawsuit holding Exxon liable for everything short of causing snow in Alaska! The damages started at $5 billion and have now dropped to $2.5 billion with Exxon (now Exxon-Mobil) still appealing.0 -
Bama, the working man (which I ) and elderly need to contact their gubment reps and start telling them to open up some of the oil and gas sources that America has in its own backyard. From what I understand, Cuba is sinkin' wells 80 miles from Miami while Florida residents moan, cry, bitch, and whine about fuel cost. Heck, Abalama has a coast with fuel sources sittin' off of it. Where are the folks who demand that we start drilling in the Alaskan wilderness area currently off limits? There are over 10 billion barrels of crude up there and at $100 per barrel that is $1 trillion dollars that Exxon-Mobil can really use. Come on, tap that final resource right now and give Exxon even more money. 0 -

Gunnut, Marathon and Exxon are doing MAJOR expansions to their facilities down here. Don't know the price on Marathon stock, but if it's at a fair price, I would consider buying some. Marathons expansion is serious.0 -
That may be their profit, but what is their profit margin????? Not so much after you add up all that they paid out to employees, suppliers, corporate taxes, overhead, etc.......
Everything is not always what it seems. Heck, even the US Government had billions in profits last year, but our country is still operating at a deficit. Don't see that published anywhere.0 -

The petroleum companies make about $.06 per gallon of gas. That $.06 pays for exploration, drilling, refining, transportation, and marketing.
The govenment gets upwards of $.60 per gallon. For what? They don't explore or drill or refine or transport a drop of oil but get ten times the money the oil company does.
I don't begrudge the oil companies making a 40 billon dollar profit as much as I begrugde the government sticking it's hand in my pocket for nothing.0 -
As a matter of fact, they are drilling off of the coast of Alabama. I happen to have a few buddies that work over there. As far as drilling in Alaska, what's that gonna do? That won't be a permanent fix. That source will run out sooner or later.
Also, the way I understand it, the refineries are operating at almost full capacity. So, we wait a few years for new ones to be built?0 -
