FedEx handgun shipping is Expensive

Maybe I didn't read enough of our forums, but I decided to use FedEx to ship a handgun from Seattle to New Mexico. With next day service, signature required, insured, in a FedEx carton it cost $70. This had to be accomplished at the FedEx counter, including inspection and wrapping, and the employee went over the numbers three times, but each time it ended at $70. For this kind of money, I could almost have driven the distance and handed the gun to the buyer. I'll research this a little better next time, but FedEx is a no go.

    An expensive item, shippped next day. Guns can also be heavy. It has nothing to do with the fact that it was a gun.

    That is probably true that is doesn't matter exactly what you are shipping next day delivery, whatever it is is going to be expensive. The catch is that with UPS (and probably all the others) if you are shipping a handgun (not sure about long guns) then it, by their rules only, HAS TO be shipped next day delivery.

    So no matter what, it will cost you about a minimum of $50.00 to ship a handgun UPS (and probably all the others.

    I believe a problem arose when handguns being shipped the usual and slower way, took longer to get through the system and so many of them were being "lost" or stolen. So I believe that the shippers, in order to solve a problems they were having with their own employees because of theft, decided the easist way to solve their problem was to over charge us, the gun shipping customers.

    For FedEx, "next day" was one of the requirements. All said and done, at least someone who can use the handgun got it and that was the goal.

    I shipped an Ortgies from NM to Lousiana for $44. Any way you look at it, shipping a handgun, if you are not an FFL, is expensive.

    The cheapest route to ship a handgun is find a dealer who will ship it for you.
    Most dealers would do it for half of what you paid.

    Fed=X has a requirement that non-dealers must ship handguns "next day" delvery only. I don't know how this affects dealers.

    I guess that a dealer is going to have a tried and true process of shipping at the lowest cost and you're right, shipping thru a dealer would have been a lot less. I can't see a dealer using FedEx and expect to achieve any kind of profit. Live and learn.

    whenever i by a gun i request that it not be fedex. i came home one day to find my gun laying on the porch.
