Goodbye Ad-Aware
I have always expressed that I like Lavasoft Ad-Aware and encouraged others to try it.
I have now uninstalled it off my system. After the last few updates to it, it runs poor. It gets locked on the update screen and does not respond, so I shut it down and try again. It can take 4 or 5 tries to get it to do what I ask.
The install might have been corrupted, but I am liking Spybot Search and Destroy better anyways, much more stable.
I also delete my entire history once a week and it takes care of just about every spyware, adware etc. Just have reenter passwords once a week.
Has anyone else had problems with Ad-Aware lately??

I had ad-aware for several years. It was a pain in the ass to use, I had to run sweeps all the time etc.
I got Stopzilla a year and a half ago. It costs $39 annually and is worth every penny. Works automatically, you never have to run sweeps. It is five times better than ad-aware.
I ran ad-aware and Stopzilla side by side for about 8 months, and I realized that ad-aware was doing nothing at all, that Stopzilla caught every bug that ad-aware did, and many others besides. So I deleted ad-aware and my computer has never been happier.0 -
I just used Advanced WindowsCare V2. Free program, does everything that the "suites" do (short of Firewall and AV) and comes highly rated by just about everyone.
They update every Friday. I run the check every Friday or whenever I install/remove software.

Just recently updated to Ad-aware 2007 from Ad-aware SE. Guess they discontinued support/updates for the SE version, because I hadn't gotten any new definitons since Dec. 2007. The 2007 does have its problems. It does sometime lock-up on the update. I will stick with it for a little while longer to see if things improve, but I think I'm going to start shopping for another one. 0 -

Same thing for me,....... def updates work fine, but if I go into the program update area, it starts to download, and then locks up.
I just go download the latest version, and all is well.
I keep thinking they are working on a fix, but I will switch to something else soon also if this keeps up!0 -
You know, I think I'll just keep using Norton Internet Security on our computers (2) just like I've been doing since it was first released. Combined with a hardware firewall I've never experienced the issues and horrors that some here seem to experience. Maybe I've been lucky all these years, perhaps I don't frequent risky internet locations like some of you may do, but while I agree it leaves a big footprint on the computer it doesn't seem to slow our computers down in any noticeable way except startup and I never need to use the computer within 30 seconds of turning it on.
I guess we each have to use the product we think works best for us.0 -

There's just not enough MAC's being used outside of Industry (Graphics design, etc.) to make it worthwhile to attack. If MAC's ever cut into the PC installed base then you might be in for a surprise.0 -

I don't really need any of this stuff myself.
I have run Ad Aware, and Spybot for years, and neither have found any issues other than cookies which everyone gets. All my cookies get deleted by CCleaner anyway!
Most of this junk comes from porn sites, and infected e-mails.[xx(]0 -

Well, I had Ad-Aware SE until January and it quit being able to be updated. I switched to the new 2007 free version and it seems to do fine. The updates don't have a screen that says it is being updated at least not a first so I have caught myself thinking that it was locked up but after waiting a bit it finishes. I have not had it catch anything though so I am not sure if that is good or bad.
Anyone have a link to Spybot? If not I will search for it.0 -

Exspensive??? 1500 bucks for a machine that will run circles around just about any off the self P.C. that cost $700 but needed 800 in upgrades to be useful.
I have a friends that have had the same MAC for 6 yrs and they run just as fast now as the day they bought there is no need to upgrade them IMO.
That is fine that the WORLD is using PC's just makes my life easier not having to deal with windows and the POS security programs.
12 people on GB maybe. there are millions of MAC's out there. True there has never been a Mac virus one day someone will figure out the how to hack a MAC but right now they are to busy cherry picking all the PC users.0 -

That program that Spanielsells linked to is pretty cool.
Does a ton of stuff,.......I use a disk image program, and a USB external drive, so I updated the image before I tried the pretty extensive crap this program does.
Made a bunch of optimizations, and removed over 200 registry entries.
So far no problems.[:D]
Puter seems a bit quicker also.
BTW,.....anyone interested in a Disk Imaging, Backup, Cloning program, that also does TOTAL system restore points much better than Windows I have found it.
Also doesn't take a "software engineer" to figure it out.[:0]0 -
lavasoft has a new version out. the old one no longer works. i downloaded the new version and it works great. i also use spybot and haven't needed it since the new lavasoft. 0 -

Norton is great except is a MAJOR resource hog. You'd be amazed just how fast your computer is if you didn't have Norton on it.0 -

I think you are all paranoid.
I gathered up all my internet securities and and kicked their butts out.
All they did was slow my machine down and I can't say they did any good at all as I still got viruses.

Norton is great except is a MAJOR resource hog. You'd be amazed just how fast your computer is if you didn't have Norton on it.You are right, it does consume resources and I have tested it without Norton and the performance decrease can be measured validating your point. However, our computers are fast enough with extra memory that for what we do you really don't notice any operational degradation and I do like all of the protection aspects and features of Norton. Also, I've never experienced any of the issues with Norton that I've seen posted here, thank goodness!0 -

All they did was slow my machine down and I can't say they did any good at all as I still got viruses.
Now I am internet securities free and my computer has never ran better.
I am on board with you, up to a point. I have tried several of the virus protection downloads. They bogged down my computer something awful. I am on an 8 year old laptop, dialup.
So I ditched all the antivirus programs and my computer sped way up. I have never had a virus, as far as I know.
On the other hand, spyware crap was killing the performance of my machine. So I had to use adaware, and I also tried Spybot for a while.
They worked pretty well, and made the performance much better. Then I ditched adaware and Spybot in favor of Stopzilla and I now have a happy computer.0 -

As far as an anti-virus goes, I just use the AVG Free. I've been using it for quite some time now with no ill effects. I haven't had a trojan, worm, virus or anything malicious since downloading it. Before downloading the AVG Free I was running Norton System Works (which I paid thru the nose for). While running Norton, I was regularly tasked with re-formatting my computer (usually about every 60 days) simply because Norton dropped the ball on a regular basis and let trojans or something in. I've been running AVG Free now for nearly a year and haven't had to re-format not one time. I can tell you this,,,,,I'll not waste anymore money on Norton System Works.
There is an alternative to all this spyware/anti-virus/trojans/worms and whatever else there is out there. Several months ago, my wife gave our son-in-law a plain janecomputer to fix up as a spare computer. He kept it for a long time and then brought it back containing 1 GB RAM/2 GB HD and loaded with an operating system called LINDOWS. I'm an old dog and I don't learn this computer stuff to well, but this is what I understood him to tell me about this LINDOWS operating platform. LINDOWS is a combination of Microsofts Windows platform and the LINUX operating system. This I understand was Linux's baby and Microsoft sued them to cease producing it. But that still doesn't stop anybody from downloading a clean copy of it off the internet. Now,,, the beauty of this system is that it needs no spyware det/anti-virus/firewall/updates NOTHING. You intall it and run it. The downside to this is that it is very un-like Windows XP, and very difficult for this old dog to understand. I watched him rip thru it doing different things, it is lightning fast. It needs no protection from malicious script simply because malicious script can't be written for it. OK,,, with that said I will now put on my kevlar and wait.0 -

Your brother may simply not be aware. If you listen to or follow Kim Kommando, she'll tell you you're a fool if you don't protect a Mac. While it is true that Mac viruses are not as prevalent as Windows viruses, they certainly do exist and Macs certainly do have security weaknesses.
But, hey, it's your computer. Do what you want.0 -

I have 4 kids, and they all spend time on the net. I don't care who you are or what system you have, if your not protected your going to get something sometime. If it were just my wife and I would would have less security then I do now. I most like the idea of the old dial up modem. 0 -
