The terrorist resposnsible for the TWA hijacking
HEZBOLLAH commander Imad Mughniyah, accused of masterminding a hijacking, suicide bombings and hostage takings of Western targets in the 1980s, was killed by a car bomb in Damascus, the Shiite Muslim group said last night.
Hezbollah accused Israel of killing Mughniyah, 45. The Israeli Government declined to comment.
Mughniyah was the most wanted terrorist in the world before Osama bin Laden came to prominence. He had long been on a list of foreigners Israel wanted to kill or capture and the FBI had placed a $US5 million ($A5.53 million) bounty on his head.
"After a life full of jihad, sacrifices and accomplishments . Haj Imad Mughniyah . died a martyr at the hands of the Israeli Zionists," said a Hezbollah statement.
Mughniyah's vehicle was blown up in a car park in the Damascus neighbourhood of Kfar Suseh about 11pm on Tuesday.
The rear of the Mitsubishi Pajero was entirely blown out by the force of the blast.
