EBRs and deer hunting.......

Well, I'm already somewhat of an odd-ball in my hunt club, being the only one who hunts almost exclusively with a handgun. To further my status as an oddity, I've been thinking about getting an EBR set up for long range deer sniping. Trouble is, I have never owned an AR type rifle of any caliber. But I WANT one!![:p]
I need you guys' (and girls') help figuring out what kind of set up I should get into. I've been looking a lot at DPMS, and I like thier offerings with the longer stainless/fluted barrels.
Any of you folks hunt with one of these and can give a noob some advice with bbl lengths, optics and such?

    Mike,..this is along the lines of what your interested in,..add your optics/scope,rings.maybe even 1" riser blocks.to give you a good cheek weld on the stock.they also make several bipods and mounts to fit the AR rifles....and have at it..I wouldn't hunt with a .223 for obvious reasons..my choice would be the .308..[;)]..good luck,..Loko

    The .458 Socom or the .450 Bushmaster would be excellent deer cartridges...probably out to 250 yards or so...

    Sorry....forgot to mention I was thinking .308 for deer.
    Loko- that's one of the ones I was ogling. Kinda leaning toward a 20" or 22" heavy bbl for long distance. That 18" heavy bbl does sound a little easier to lug about......

    while shooting out at a informal target range a few weeks ago a gentleman showed up with one of those .458 SOCOM's WHAT A RIFLE!! That thing was just too cool and was pretty accurate. He uses it to hunt wild pigs but it looked fine for deer and elk.

    I have taken a few whitetails with my .223. Dropped 'em like a rock. Head shots are always fantastic. Shoulder shots drill'em, too.

    AR10,...nuff said. Or have a Dtech upper built in any number of hunting calibers.

    My suggestion would be the DPMS in .260. It is a deer killing machine.

    Seems to me like we are missing the point ... for deer hunting one does not need a killing machine! A single shot will do just fine. What is the point of being able to spray the woods with bullets?

    If you want long range deer sniping in an EBR, find an M1A or an M14 and put it on a black stock.
