Hey you CAMERA guys....
Just wondering what the king of the hill camera is these days. I was looking around and from what little I can tell it looks like the Nikon D3....but I'm not good with investigating these things. My husband used to be a photographer. He burnt himself out taking pics of weddings and I thought about getting him a nice digital camera to "spark" him back into taking pics. He has a VERY nice Nikon 35mm and several high end lenses that he could use if I got him a Nikon. I want to get him something that is worthy of someone who knows what they are doing......not the point and shoot type that I use (poorly.)
Anyone know a good place to look for deals on whatever I'm looking for? I just paid a credit card off and if feels weird being out of debt....not really OUT of debt....just out of icky debt.

As a complete NIKON freak (still have my old "F" Apollo and boxes of lens) I can only suggest one brand of digital camera...
CANNON
There is a good chance that your hubby's old Nikkors won't sync with the a new digital body. Far too much auto this and that to deal with.
PS - digital is a totally different world then film. The processing of Digital (PhotoShop etc) is time consuming. As a former Pro, your hub will want to color balance his monitor and printer. That way he will get photographic prints of what he expects. Most people are happy with "snap shots" whether film or digital. True Photogos pull their hair out when dealing with Digital... it's very time consuming. White Balance is a whole new world. Shooting in RAW mode allows for the best Photographs but needs to be cleaned up in Photoshop. Just something to think about.
And don't get caught up in the Film vs Digital debate.... each is different (apples and oranges) so there shouldn't be any comparison.
PPS - try to not get up in the Pixel race if you can. While 10 MP sounds like a whole bunch, 8 MP will suit 99% of Photogs just fine (unless "they" are giving away the 10 MP, which they aren't).
Megapixels are measured Logarithmically. So while 8 MP sounds like twice as many as 4 MP, it isn't true. Megapixels have become a marketing tool, nothing more....0 -
If your husband was used to the feel of an SLR I am not sure he will like the hand of the point and shoots. I was a 35mm hobby photographer in school and early life, never liked the feel of the pocket cameras. They all seem to have too much shutter delay. Bought a Nikon D70s and liked it. Shutter is ok but not like a 35mm. Although my old Nikon lenses from the F2's and FE's will mount the digital body they are totally manual...therefore I do not use them. He may depending on the type of photos he will take. Mine are all family and travel these days.
The D40x is a pretty good basic digital camera. There are package deals out there with 2 lenses that are pretty good for the money.
I do not know anything about Cannon's at all.
These guys are pretty good to work with if you do not have a local camera store. I have bought a lot of cameras from them over the years.

The CANON Digital Rebel XT or XTI is one of the sweetest cameras out there, pretty simple to operate, and tons of super CANON lenses to play with.
The old Nikon 35mm lenses aren't that compatible with the new digital Nikons, some will work but will probably end up only manual......
If your spending the money you may as well buy a camera that will take interchangeable lenses, a good wide angle lens 18x55mm for those barn-side photo's of rifles, a good intermediate lens 70 to 135MM for normal stuff, and a telephoto 135 to 400 for the long shots.......0 -

Great input guys!!! Thank you very very much. Larry hasn't ever really gotten used to digital photos. He says he used film for so long that he just hasn't gotten used to digital. Before we moved he had a darkroom....and since he really hasn't used his major equipment in years we haven't gotten him set up to do major photography here.
He mentioned getting a high end scanner to be able to upload our old family photos. Our family Christmas party was where he got to play with my Uncle's nice digital camera and decided he wanted to get back into photography. Since I know he will probobly never buy himself something nice....I am going to try to investigate this.
One thing I know that I want.....FAST....he has said a problem he has is that digital cameras work differently in how the picture is taken. I want something that when you press that button....click (not the pause...click.) Not being a pro myself I have NO idea how to actually say what I am talking about.0 -
Nikon digital SLRs are the BEST in the industry. Get him the D80 as a less expensive alternative to the D3.
ALL Nikon SLR lenses, film or digital, are compatible with each other. So ALL of his existing lenses will work on any of the digital SLRs.
I have the D70s and could not be happier with it.0 -
Cameras are like people, some are short some are tall, some are fat, some are small, and some don't have enough pixels where it matters. It all depends on with you want to do with the camera. If you want professional quality then at a minimum ten mega pixels and lotsa bucks is what you need, the extra bucks covers added features, which if you are not in the business you probably will never use. If all you do is Ebay and family then a five MP will work as you can take pictures from 5.0 all the way down to VGA, and the cost is not bad.
Just my opinion, and I am an expert in my opinion. Of course I have been known to be wrong, hummm... fancy that.0 -

I would pass on the Nikon D3 at the moment. It just came out in November which makes getting your hands on one kind of hard right now. It being so new. Not many people have had the chance to really put it through it paces yet to test it's quality and longtivity.
Nikon D40 and the Pentax K10D are great cameras. If your husband is use to an SLR 35mm. Either one of these cameras will have him shooting pics in a matter of minutes. I bought a Pentax *istD when I bought my digital. It will be passed to the kids when I move up to the K10D.
Not all digital SLR cameras can use old 35mm SLR camera lens. My Pentax can use a lot of them. But I have to be careful as to which type I use.
Word of warning. DO NOT buy high quality camera equipment from places like E-Bay, Amazon and such. For you will not have the support that you need should something happen to your camera.
Online I will only deal with B&H Photo Video. They stand behind what they sale and offer the best service that I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. I have yet to buy anything from them and not gotten a phone call wanting to know if the shipment arrived OK and if I was satisfied with the quality of the product I received. B&H may not be the cheapest place to buy but as far as I am concerned. They are the best.
You do not need at $5000 10 or 12 Megapixel camera to get good clear photos. Just a good quality camera and a good set of lens to go with it.0 -

Buy a used camera for 30% of new his old lenses wil work just fine
The new top end Nikon run about $2300 with no lense.

I've been a CANON GEEK since I bought my first SLR!
Best as I can recall, I've owned an AT-1, an AE-1 (maybe 2), two A-1's, an ELAN and finally a G-3 (digital). Wanna talk lenses ... just about all of them up to, and including, a 500mm.
I researched the small 'pocket Nikon' (with a BIG LED display) for a couple of weeks (never have spent that much time researching anything before - including my second wife)! I must have spent at least 30 minutes at the sales counter with three or four brands of cameras spread out before me (most Canons), before GRUDGINGLY buying the Nikon (secretly hoping it'd crap out within a few days and justify my better intuition)!!!
Well, Christmas has come and gone and it's with me constantly ... it's worked perfectly in every department! Never thought I'd need 12 megapixels ... and SURPRISE - the photos are incredible!
... I'm still a 'Canon Guy' (at heart, anyway) and the Nikon's still on 'probation' but I'm really impressed!

I'd definitely get him an SLR if it's what he's used to.
Also, I think you pretty much have to have an SLR if you want to eliminate the shutter delay.
The only digital SLR that I've handled was a Nikon D70 that had been tricked out with better lenses than came stock. I was impressed with it as a camera body and the images were awesome (but for what she spent on the lenses, they should be).0 -
anyone who has to ask about cameras probably shouldnt be buying a Nikon D3 or anything on that level. However, the D3 is the first full frame digital camera made by Nikon and there is great excitment about it. I might get one myself and upgrade from my D2X. If you buy a camera on that level they are worthless without a full compliment of good lenses which could run you over $10,000 minimum. so with camera, lenses, tripods, batteries, cards, software and everything else....you are looking at maybe $25,000. 0 -
Civil.....the camera wouldn't be for me. I wouldn't get myself anything I couldn't loose and replace within a day or two. My better half is the camera guy. He has several high end Nikon 35mm cameras...along with backdrops, lighting, flashes, lenses, filters, meters and other things which I have no idea how to work.
I once grabbed up one of his cameras to take a picture...when I looked through the thing to try and take a picture I gave up. It looked like it might be easier to fly a plane.0 -

lol, yeah the D3 is basically a fully manual camera in that you cant just turn it on and have the camera make the best decisions for you. it doesnt even have a pop up flash.
i always reccoment a more user friendly camera unless you are a semi or pro photographer.0 -
The pictures look so detailed and not blurry at all. When I see pics like that I also see what it would look like if I tried....blurry as all get out with at least one of my fingers covering the lens and a big ole' shadow of myself blocking whatever light there might be on the subject.
I am going to see if I can get him to look at everything everyone has suggested and maybe he will get what he wants....but I bet he won't ever splurge as much as it will be required to in order to buy a good camera. I will more than likely have to do some bargaining or major listings of penny auctions to get what he needs. It will not be a D3 I am 99.999% shure.....but you guys are helping a great deal with this decision.0 -
