Rabbits for food

I love eating rabbit and have not had it in quite a while.

If I was to start looking for rabbits to raise for food, what type of rabbits would I get?

I know there are some breeds that are not food types.

    Makes sence to me Kevin. Round-ap all the materials you can BEFORE you go out and buy anything...[;)]
    It'd be nice if all they need is Alfalfa and clean water to grow a good bunny.That's make for some good economical meat.I can see it now .Bunny-jerky, bunny-sausage,bunny-burger,bunny-meatballs,Buffalo-bunny...What else?lol

    Classic095 here.. I raised new zealand whites for the hospitals and the jails in Kentucky.. Rabbit meat is touted as the best meat for people on restrictive diets.. Czeck Giants make a good meat rabbit.. but the New Zealand is the rabbit of choice.. American dutch are small but also good eating..

    At one time I had 500 breeders, and was selling around 1000 young rabbits every month.. Lot of work, vacinations, malclusians to take care of, and weeding out the EATERS.. (they eat their young) Automatic waterers, and feeders are a must unless you are going small time such as 5 or 6 breeders and then you would only need one buck and could feed em daily by hand.. A meat rabbit should not exceed 5 lbs, as that is what the hospitals and prisons wanted..Great Protein and no Fat..

    Even on a small scale they are a lot of work and just like a chicken they need a nest box for each doe.

    At a 1000 per Mo.turn-over, their must have been a decent buck in it.Why did U quit? Were you having to clean/skin and butcher all the meats yourself? I can see why jails would want it, but why Hospitals? How in hell dod they get inmates to eat it? I would think it'd give them a good case for "cruel and VERY UNUSUAL" punishment...Now that i have thunk about it.I suppose given the choice between fried rabbit or MYSTERY-MEAT[xx(], i'd go with the bunny..[:D]

    Classic095 here.. I quit because the local place that processed the rabbits, lost 45,000 lbs of rabbit meat, and the Credit union closed em down and confiscated all their processing machinery . This was 30 years ago that I raised rabbits, and the processing plant paid a whopping 50 cent a pound on live rabbits.. I cut back to around 20 breeders for a while and processed em myself and sold a bunch at Fort Knox along with the Honey my 26 hives produced.. and the market just kinda dried up around there and then I moved to Florida..Also Feed went up about double and the profit margine did not make it feasable to raise for commercial use..

    As long as you use 1/2" mesh flooring in the cages, all you'll ever need to do is shovel the Bunny-Buckshot out from under the cage, and it makes good Fert. I'd do it myself, but they don't grow well in So.Florida.


    My neighbor does this vey thing.He has elevated beds over his garden beds.He has around ten beds with the rabbit bens over the top.Its a great setup.Feeds the rabbits, cleans cages(what doesn't fall through the mesh)and weeds/works in the manure all at one time.
