We all supposedly know how ineffective 38spl 158 grain lead round nose is for self defense.....or do we?

    Ok, This is a general discussion on the 38 special. Who has one? What type? What do you use it for? Pros and cons of the calibur. [8D]

    What would you consider the best target, (under 50 ft) self defense 38 to purchase. Price being no object. I live in Ohio so the chances of a conceal and carry law are about as slim as shaved ham.
    I had a S&W MDL. 10 with the thin barell, which seemed pretty good.
    Your opinion would be appreciated and taken under consideration. I need one for my son's Christmas present and he's pretty sharp, so I don't want to get something he'll look at and say this thing is no good!

    As a member of the colecting pubblic, my recomendation is a Collt Singal Action Amry in .38

    I have to disagree with you on this one Rack Ops. I'm going to recommend the .38 special goose gun. They're getting pretty darn rare nowadays, and are considered the ultimate .38 special.

    I would have to say the Snith and Wesson .38 Maximum is the utiment colleckable as so few of them were maid.

    I believe it is the certified, wood cased, pre-Model 27, N-Frame ".357 Smith & Wesson Magnum".

    Or, alternatively, the one called the ".38 S&W Special Heavy Duty" also know as a ".38 on a .45 Frame". An N-Frame .38 Special.

    I would love to own either.

    I did forgat about the Modle 29 .38 Speciel with pinned cylinder, recessed grips and fluted barral, with the imitation mother of pearl inlays. Wush I had one of them. Forgot to sey that the colletcing pubic would love to find this one two.

    I like the Colt Detective Special.
    For pure shooting, i love my colt Python with .38 specials. Shoots like a .22.
    I think the old "collect what you like" advice is good advice. If you want an investment, there are probably better ways to do it.
