What would be more humane?
My rooster has been crowing all day today and I was thinking about taking an axe and shuting him up for good.
Then I got an idea to duct tape my dogs bark collar on the rooster so it gets shocked everytime it crows.
What would you do?
Ok this is tongue in cheek for those who think I am serious.
I will let him crow all he wants but these few things did kind of cross my mind.

Ya need a rooster to protect your flock. Even if'n you don't raise the chicks, just gather eggs. If you don't have a rooster, 1 hen will stop laying and assume rooster duties. Never heard a hen crow though.0 -
Let me tell you a rooster story. When I was about 4, we lived on my grandparents farm in WVa. In those days, the feed/farm store would sell chicks dyed in colors for the kids. My cousin and I each got one. Hers died but mine grew up to be a mean azz rooster. Grandma had about 25 chickens besides this one. This rooster was so mean, he would try to flog anyone who came in the barn lot, where the chickens hung out. Trouble was, the outhouse was in the barn lot. One day I had to go do #2, so I waited until the mean rooster was up on the hill and I made a dash to the little wooden structure. When I came out, I saw all the other chickens still up on the hill, but I didn't see him. I made a dash for the yard fence. When I had made it about half way, the rooster came down on my head, spurring and flogging. You can imagine how terrifying this would be to a four year old. My grandma came out of the house with a broom and beat him off of me. He must have been up on the outhouse waiting for me to come out.
Next day, I didn't see him anywhere, so I asked grandma if something had happened to him. All she said was "remember the fried chicken we had for supper last night?"0 -

Yesterday I had a party here and I had about 5 little girls 11 on down to 7 years old and one little boy about 5 with me and they wanted to see the hens and eggs.
That rooster started attacking a 9 year old girl and then chased the little boy.
It was funny entertainment for the adults who saw it but but there were a couple kids crying when the feathers settled.
This Rooster is for next spring when I want to hatch some chicks in an incubater.0 -

Anything that will eat a hen, will eat a rooster just as quick.

NOT EVERYTHING that will eat a hen CAN eat a rooster, I'll guarantee that, for sure. A hawk can take out a hen or the baby and adolescent young, but a grown, killer rooster with his spurs intact will tear the hawk to pieces unless it can get away in time.
AS FOR A HEN CROWING LIKE A ROOSTER, they sure will! Not very well, but they'll do it. In every crowd (flock) there's an alpha hen, and she'll act studly to the other hens and peck them all to ensure her #1 spot. Occasionally, she'll let out this raspy rooster crow. Pretty weird.
I came home a couple weeks ago and found my favorite little hen upside down in a mud puddle with her face ripped off. I thought she was dead, but she made a little sound when I spoke to her. I cleaned her and warmed her up in the garage sink, dried her with a hair dryer and sewed up her wounds. She lost one of her eyes and she's now recouperating inside in a cage.
My guess is that it was a hawk and that she gave him quite a fight, tiring him out and that he couldn't get airborne with her, dropping her into the mud puddle. I was heading back up toward the house after feeding the horses three days ago and I confirmed this. A very large redtailed hawk swooped down hard and hit my ace rooster. This rooster is a real killer and he shrugged that hawk off like a cheap coat. The hawk went up about three feet over about fifteen feet and landed on younger, less savvy rooster. About that time, my wife, hearing the comotion of all the entire chicken population, turned the terrier loose on the hawk. That dog homed in like a blur and the hawk didn't see her until the last moment. The hawk released the young rooster and took off a couple milliseconds prior to the dog nailing him. You don't see that every day.0 -
Hawk took a full grown rooster (with nice spurs) from my pen. A few hens too. Until I put a top on the pen. Only had 4 roosters, and they were all 4 mean. After attacking US for the LAST TIME [:(!] the last 3 DID end up being soup. [:p]
Should have heard that hawk complaining after I put the top on. Came back and sat up in the tree, moaning, complaining, and squawking for days. I thought it was funny. I would go out and talk to it. Ahhhh....poor baby, no more free lunch. Then I would laugh at it, and with a departing squawk, it would take off. Wish I had a digital camera back then. [V]
Guess all hawks are not alike. At least, around these parts.0 -
I'm pretty sure rooster is right up there with old barn owl for tenderness.

My oldest had about 5 chickens....we had a nice little set up for them. It was a huge dog pen made out of chain-link fence (even the top was enclosed.) I have no idea what got the poor things.....but it was like a horror movie for chickens. There were nothing but beaks and feathers in that pen one afternoon.
If we get chickens again....we are gonna have a Rooster.0
