Trying to Arm Daughter Flying to Calif.

My daughter and I both have our CCW and usually (me always) carry when we are out and about in KS and MO (except in legally restricted places). I feel MUCH better seeing my daughter leave the house in the evening knowing that she has a firearm, knows how to use it and, I believe, WILL use it if needed. But this weekend she is flying to Calif to visit a girl friend who moved there several years ago. Daughter approached me about what kind of defensive weapons (if any) she could either take with her or purchase in Calif. (pepper spray, etc).

We both agree that taking her .38, not only on the plane, but when driving around Calif., won't work. At first I thought she could pack in her checked luggage her pepper apray and an her Asp extendible baton. But then I got to thinking about how I read someplace the Calif doesn't allow it's citiziens to carry any pepper spray over .5 oz., and not extendible batons at all. So now I guess I will just advise her to get here rental car and stop at the first gun shop (if there are any), sporting goods stores or martial arts store and see what she can purchase.

But my main point I am trying to get to is that once again society has things backwards. My daughter is a peaceful, lawful, non-violent young woman with a clean police record. Yet here we both are having to worry about EXACTLY what kind of defensive "tools" she can carry for protection without worrying about getting arrested.

The good citizens shouldn't have to worry like this while the violent criminals go about their violent business without worrying about anything but getting caught during one of their crimes. A lawful citizen should be able to freely carry whatever they reasonably want and the criminals should be the ones to worry about what a citizen might be carrying.

But today's society has things upside down.

Just my rant for the day.

    I think he meant stop in a gun store or martial arts store to get pepper spray or any other kind of CA legal protection she can get.

    As a resident of Kalifornia I still smile when I see paranoia splashed all over the place.

    I've never had a problem with such a dilemma.

    I just don't make it a habit to stick up banks and gas stations (if I was ever to carry one) when out and about. Trying to be an advocate of common sense, I also try to stay out of Watts at 3am. I know a number of friends who carry - of course - and it's always nice to have (old) ones never registered - and they're still very available, here and there.

    However, I certainly would never think of breaking the law.

    Where is she flying into? If she is going into Onterio International have her look me up, my shop is only 5 miles from the airport and I can make sure she is properly protected withen the rules and guidelines stated by CA state law.

    Tasers aren't illegla in Cali.

    And in reference to zipperzap's comment, while I agree that California is not a crime-a-minute murder spree, it does have plenty of things to be worried about, especially if you're female. I once saw a woman jogging who had not two or three, but seven men, likely illegals, following her with wolf calls. And they were not keeping their distance. Fortunately my brother and I stepped in and asked what was going on, giving her time to get the hell out of there, but I shudder to think what would have happened had they followed her home.

    If she's coming in to L.A., I can give you a list of gun stores in the area that will be able to help your daughter out with Cali-legal means of self-defense.

    Have to agree tr. The list of corruption perpetrated against our citizens seems to be unending and getting worse. I always wonder what the breaking point would be for people. If there could ever be one. The government would rather have thousands of victims than the off chance that one armed person might have an accident or act unlawfully. Makes for an increasingly higher number of target rich enviroments in this country where the criminals are safe.

    I'm usually told if you worry about security that much, you're just paranoid. Well, so be it. I guess I am. Most people are under the assumption nothing could ever happen to them. They say, "It's a small town. Nothing's going to happen here." Except things do and then after a couple years go by, everybody forgets about them.

    I'm glad to see posts like this with somebody actually thinking in advance. Pretty rare anymore.

    Yep, protect the illegals and criminals..EMM you should have the right to shoot these POS's with a Kali-illegal AR-15 and get a medal for public service.

    Thanks everybody. I will show my daughter this thread and she can pick and choose what she wants to do.

    I didn't mean Calif. was a crime ridden state. But I just get a little nervous when daughter goes hundreds of miles away from home. I feel she is knowledgeable and has a lot of comfort and understanding about the KC Metro area. But when she is plopped down into a new city, and she has to divert her attention to new places, neighborhoods, ways of doing things, etc. I have more concern for her than if she was just at home in good ol' KS & MO.

    Yeah, often when there is no visible danger or any newspaper or tv news about a serial killer/rapist being on the loose, and somebody like me mentions being careful about safety and security, many people would call me paranoid. But if we could always predict when and where we might have to save our lives, wouldn't it be easier to just have a cop meet us there and save us? My point is that no matte how safe it seems, there are thousands of people laying in their grave that, if they could, would have been a whole lot more cautious.

    Think I will give her one of my knives on a chain around her neck and maybe that 2oz of pepper spray a poster mentioned.

    Well, according to Law Enforcement Agency Uniform Crime Reports, in 2006 (last year I could find data on) the population and violent crime numbers were:

    CA Pop: 36,457,549
    Violent crime: 194,120

    MO Pop: 5,842,713
    Violent crime: 31,880

    That's 187.8 people for every violent crime in CA,
    and 183.3 in MO.


    She's safer out here.

    Grocery stores are the worst! Pepper spray is almost a must have to word
    off the attackers armed with clip boards and pens! When surrounded, the opening question will be "Are you registered to vote"-[:D]

    Sorry to get off on a tangent here, but I just wanted to add this...
    If you carry pepperspray, IMHO, nothing beats FOX 5.3 I am an OCAT instructor, and have been sprayed with nearly everything on the market. The Fox is 5.3 million scoville heat units, most of the major competetors are in the 500,000 SHU range. If any pepperspray is going to work, Fox 5.3 is it.

    Sounds to me that she (daughter) should have offered plane ticket to friend... that way she could still carry and knows the lay of the land. But it is also sound advise to stay out of Watts (anytime).
