It is my pleasure guys.. Most of the kids I started with had never held a gun, Now I got em breakin steady up in the 20s, got a few of the older ones that do 25 often..
We are taking them to the state meet in march. Last year 5 of my boys and girls placed in the top 5 of 180 shooters..[:D][:D][:D]They have a combination shoot at state,, sheet and trap 50 birds each dicipline..My top guy last year got 48 and 48.. I love the grin on their face when they hit that first bird..[:D][:D][:D]0 -

We have 5 stnd with 12 launchers, normal without the added remote ones is 9.. We have skeet trap, wobble trap, 5 stand, archery, pistol and rifle for 10 yards to 200 yds, cowboy alley, three gun matches like hogans alley. Dont know if we can make a sporting clays course or not as we only have 88 acres, and the state pretty much confines where our lead falls as we are right in the middle of a state game preserve where the club owns the land.. So fighting with EPA and the state we gotta watch where our shot falls.. 0 -

I just start with the basics, Stance, gun mount and alignment, two eyes open and watch the birdie.. Usually I start them at about 10 feet behind the trap house and get them to breaking birds, then move back..
There are about two hours instruction before they even pick up a gun. I have made a fake shotgun for them to use to practice swing , bead alignment, and target acquistion.. so I can stand in front of them and observe what they are doing.. Works great..
I not only use the techniques I tought in the military, but still have to follow the training procedure set up by the University of florida which sponsers the 4-H program here..0 -

First of all its good to see someone else out training the youth in the art of shooting... I did that alot in my old town.
Second, Have you ever given any consideration to going to state and national events.
When i was shooting as a teen. My team and I took home first place in the Skeet, Sporting clays, And 5-Stand events 3 years in a row at the State level[:)]
Then the Shooting Club made the decision to send us to Nationals.. I was one year to old to go to Nationals[:(], But the rest of my team succeaded in taking all of these events at Nationals for another 3 years.
After i became to old to compete in the youth league i started teaching how to shoot instead of shooting myself.... Partly do to the fact that the club only sponsors the youth shooters, Once your to old, you have to pay for everything yourself[:(]... I realy enjoy teaching though and its fun to take a kid that can't hit the broad side of barn and in one week have him shooting 20 out 25 at skeet[8D]
If you think your kids are good enough to compete at the State or even the National level, I would definitly look into getting a local shooting club to fund them... Its realy a lot of fun competing at those levels... And who knows, They might come back with a few of these[:D][;)]0 -

I shoot about 4 competitions a year here in florida but I am 70 years old (feel about 30) I do more recreactional shooting with friends here than anything..
I sort of fell into this thing with the 4-H as the youngsters ask the club if I couldnt be their range officer.. Under 4-H rules no one regardless of their credentials can teach 4-h without going through their program. The youngsters put up the money to send me to their 4-H program camp to be quailified according to the University of Florida to teach 4-H, which I considered an honor that the kids thought that much of me to do it..
I do get out and shoot with the youngsters, and when they beat me [:D]
you should be on hand to see the reactions..
Shooting is my real passion as I shot with the Army pistol, rifle, skeet and trap teams off on and on for 21 years, and there is always room for improvement.[;)]
I learn from these kids everytime I spend an entire sunday with them, and believe me their minds are always busy with questions, not only about shooting but life in General..
As I said it is my pleasure to work with the youth and perpetuate the shooting sports..[^]0 -
Oh, I forgot to mention.
If you do get a club to sponsor you for the National level, Once a year you HAVE to have a completely free YOUTH open shoot. Advertise heavily... Shells will be supplied by the club, And a loaner gun if they don't have one.... All kids get 50 free rounds at a event of your choosing.
This completes one of two goal,
1st, It gets the youth involved in shooting, Which is always a good thing.
2nd, Its the absolute best way to scout out new talent for your youth team to go to nationals with.
Whenever you spot a kid that shows potential, You simply contact the parents and inform them that the club would like to sponsor thier kid as a National level shooter.
The club i was a part of does this every year and they are never short of good quality youth shooter.0 -

There are fewer and fewer men and women fo our sport who are willing to give the time to train youngsters in how to safely compete in shooting sports. My biggest complaint is, how do we expect to keep the second ammendment in tact if younger folks don't understand what shooting sports are, or that guns are not evil?

This is a very very nice thing your doing, its building our youth that may not of had the chance to be introduced to the fun of shooting. I can only imagine how self rewarding this is for you.

Shooting is my passion also, But in the realm of shotgun shooting[:p]
I have boxes full of old trophies from competing at the State level and would love to continue competing.... But the simple fact is shooting at that many events cost money and i don't have that much money to spend[:(]
So, I still compete at a few smaller events, But devote most of my time to coaching the future National competitors[^]
Like you said, There's nothing like the look on thier face when they break that first clay[^]0 -
That is so awesome--the very first time I got to shoot my first firearm was at 4H camp-a single shot .22 and I was HOOKED! Went home and asked the folks for a .22 and ended up getting a used Ithaca 49 single shot---shot that rifle for years and even won a few informal matches when I was in the Scouts. Sad to say I had to retire it as it started not firing anymore when you pulled the trigger and no gunsmith in my area could fix it(falling block action) guess the firing pin was worn out. 0 -
I dont care about the time and the expense,, I get nothing from the club as all my work is volunteer.. What I do get is the look on a kids face when he wins a trophy and that is priceless. Isnt enough money in the world that could pay for that.
I not only teach the youngsters but I teach adults as well, Rather teach the kids.. [;)]
Our range has all options for the young shooter,, hunter safety, shooting classes in all diciplines, rifle, pistol, shotgun,, I am just happy that I can be a part of it even though it is late in my life..0 -

You are a WONDERFUL person for giving your time and teaching those kids. If I were closer I would come up and take a lesson myself! How many young ladies have you got shooting? 0 -
We have 2 young ladies in our club, had three and the one that faded away was the best of the three, She was 16 all most 17 and discovered BOYS and CARS , Statewide with the 4-H shotgun programs at the different clubs I would estimate may 30 young ladies . Most of the girls enrole in the archery dicipline..
One of out Best young lads, discovered FISHING and he is eat up with it. His dad bought him a Bass boat, and the kid does nothing but live on the water..Maybe he will get tired of it in time and return to the sport, I dont know..0 -

Steverayspeck: Yesterdays shoot was the FREE day shoot for all of the 4-H clubs in Florida.. Clays, ammo, range fees, range officers and instructors all provided at no cost to the 4-H, we had 5 districts show up with their shotgun shooters. Most of them I know from being at the state matches and from our other anual Free shoot or club provides.
Not only does our club sponsor the 4-8, but we also have the Navy Junior ROTC kids in their shooting programs, along with the junior marine cadet program here..0
