walmart ammo
Yes, another Walmart ammo thread. Went there today (for other stuff) and walked by the usually empty ammo case. To my surprise, the case was pretty-well filled up, minus the rimfire corner. Full of ammo of all descriptions, sizes and shapes...most unusual for Gulf Breeze, FL. They even had 420 round cans of Federal/LC 55gr 5.56 . I stocked up on 5.56 long ago but have never seen the cans in this WM. I don't really know the current market, but the price was $164. Certainly higher than I paid before, but at least it was in stock.

I stopped at walmart today to purchase the Federal Value Pack, box of 550 .22LR for under $10.00. When I was at the checkout, the clerk was prompted by the register to ask me "is this for a handgun?". I had never been asked this when purchasing ammo, so I responded "it is a common caliber used in both handguns and rifles". The cashier then says "well I'll just hit the "no" button then". I asked her what difference did it make whether it was for a handgun or a rifle and she said she did not know. What was this about? 0 -

man..ammo is cheap there...i bought 500 rounds of winchester subsonic on wednesday and paid $58 australian for it...that would be about $49 u.s. ...i can only dream of your ammo prices...i wont scare you and tell you what 20 rounds for a 30-30 or 6.5x55 cost[V] 0 -

yup. the fact that lots of different calibers are used in both handguns and long guns is beyond the mental capacity of our lawmakers.0 -
They used to do that here at K-Mart and then Wal-Mart. There "was" a silly law that required the retailers record the ID of buyers of "handgun" ammo.
They no longer do it here, but there may be some retail computer systems that still pop that thing up on their cash registers when you check out.0 -

As you may or may not know, there is a significant difference between those 500-round bulk boxes or ten-box bricks and a brick of premium .22s.
The promo ten or fifteen dollar 500-round units generally do not cycle reliably in semi-auto rifles and handguns. Additionally, they contain a considerable number of dud rounds.
But, as long as you are just plinking or shooting vermin with them, especially if you are shooting a bolt action or single-shot rifle or a revolver, that's okay, I think.
Reliability costs more.0 -
The reason they ask is due to Federal age requirements. I am well over 21 so it really does not matter.
About the only ammo I buy there is the Federal packs, and I have fun with them when they ask. I reply with answers like "well I might use 1rd out of that box in a pistol (vs handgun)." Or when buying more then one box I will say pistol on some of the boxes and rifle on other then ask what happens when I get them mixed up. I have said MG before too and you get really dumb looks.
I have shot 10's of thousands of rounds of "bulk" ammo with very very few problems. I have used all kinds of semi auto rifles and pistols. While it may not be as expensive as "premium" .22 ammo it sure does a good job. My wallet and shooting time thank me.0 -

I have shot a lot of this ammo and use it mostly for plinking. I shoot it through a Marlin bolt action and also a Ruger single six and have not had a FTF or dud yet....knock on wood.
I guess the whole thing with the cashier just caught me off guard, as I have never been asked before. Next time I will be better prepared and give an answer as rediculous as the question.0 -
Last time I bought from Walmart they wouldn't even let me purchase it at the front; I had to buy it right there at the sporting goods desk. I usually don't have a sense of humor by the time I'm paying for it, so I don't mess around with the idiot cashiers. Although, I sometimes show my military ID instead of drivers license. It doesn't have my birthday on it. Last time, the cashier looked at it for a minute, and I said, "I'm 27" and she said ok and sold me the ammo. 0 -

you have to be 21 to purchase handgun ammo,
as far as walmart .22lr goes, the damn ammo tends to go "click" as much as "bang" in a Sig .22 I've been using CCI Minimag as my munitions of choice for that pistol0 -

Feb. is another date set for ammo to have a price increase at the wholsale level.....AGAIN!!!!!! Get any deals you see and don't blame the gun store for the 100% price increase since last year. 0 -

I have fired thousands of rounds of the stuff, and can count the duds and non-cycles as being very few.

I always felt the pistol or rifle question was for tracking demand of customer preference. More pistol folks, more pistol related goodies, more rifle people, more rifle goodies. Some Walmarts no longer have firearms, ammo and related products. Hopefully my local ammo source won't become one of the "some".
On the other note, the Federal 550 packs are great. I've the same experience as Highball with few to none with duds. My semi pistols and rifles run fine with it. If I sort it by rim thickness I get 10 round dime sized holes at 50 yds with my stock Walmart 10/22! Inexpensive and lovin it!0 -

well, this hasn't happened to me yet, but a buddy i work here in michigan with said that they made him sign a piece of paper because the caliber he bought was supposedly "handgun". had nothing to do with his age, he's in his 50's and looks it. they didn't give him an option. the ammo he bought was common for both handgun and rifle. like i said, this hasn't happened to me yet, but if it does, i'll take my business elsewhere, walmart has no reason to track how much of what type of ammo i'm buying.

the reason the cashiers ask rifle or handgun has nothing to do with tracking for inventory purposes. it is because law says you have to be 18 yrs or older to buy rifle/shotgun ammuniton or firearms, and 21 yrs or older for handgun ammunition or firearms. they have to ask for the age verification promp that comes up on their screen. obviously some people don't need to show an i.d. for age verification. some of the cashiers are too dumb to know why the prompt comes up but the ones who do will usually just hit the rifle option to speed up the process. for those of you who have never been asked, i'm sorry to have to tell you this, but you look old! haha 0 -

I have also had that $10.00 a box of 550 bulk pack Federal, outshoot the CCI green tag, Eley Ten-EX, and even their own Olympic gold medal winning Gold medal Ultra Match...in a Browning A-bolt, and Buckmark Varmint. Yes they are dirty, but the 22LR is the single most used, dirtiest metallic cartrige there is today.0 -

you all must be getting lucky with your ammo. i picked up two of those 550 rnd boxes at walmart and get alot of duds with them. they are ok will accurecy but i will spend the extra on the good stuff when hunting. work good for plinking. 0 -

Being in the land of the California Condors where lead ammo is a serious charge if caught with them in the Condor range (which is practically the whole state). I know the .22 rounds will be harder to purchase (very soon). I went about the local gun shop looking and they had very little selections.
I for see the handguns still have to meet the California Safety test in the future but there will be no ammo to fill the guns. I suppose this will be the new gun ban illegalize the "Lead" ammo then no more gun violence.
Hopefully I'll be out in Oregon before this silliness gets worse.0
