Another Gun Range Death last night

A woman in the Houston, TX area apparently rented a pistol at a local range and was found dead on the firing line after about 20 minutes. Could be suicide or a backfire...PD is investigating.

I have always wondered about the safety of "renting a gun" to a person. A person with a rented gun clearly is not familiar with it as someone who owns the gun.

Was the range master neglient in renting a gun without a safety instruction? Could this have been an avoidable accident where the woman was trying to clear the weapon (per the announcement) and accidently shot herself?

    Only one range in town allows it - and they have the vast majority of
    suicides.

    I've waited until someone who is renting a pistol when I get there, to finish shooting before I went into the range area at the shop. Always makes me a little nervous. We have no range master on the line at the pistol range. They just give you a paddle with a lane number on it and send you in. That makes me nervous too.

    What If there were kids there?
    What If someone tried to stop her and she hurt or killed them?

    Well...at least she didn't take out anyone else with her. Must have been tired of living.

    Lots of folks just want to test drive sumthin they haven't tried before. I went to an indoor range one time with my "Boom Box" (what my neighbor calls my large pistol case) loaded down with about twenty pounds of guns and ammo.

    After doing the customary inspection prior to entering the range, I decided to rent a gun. The management wouldn't let me, because it's their policy not to rent guns to people who are there by themselves, due to the suicide factor. But, what, but... No dice. Can't really blame them, they don't want to get sued out of existence.


    I blame the lawyers.


    Present company excluded, of course.

    Actually, the article doesn't say "apparent suicide", only that she had a gunshot would to the head. It could have been some careless person walking behind her or in the next booth who accidentally shot her.

    We have one range here that rents handguns. They put someone with the person on the fireing line just to make sure they know how to handle and fire the gun they are renting and to see that they do no damage to the ranges guns..

    A person intent on taking their own life will do it no matter what precautions you take. sooner or later they will get the job done.
