SxS shotgun

I'm going to the gunshow at Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend. I thought I might look for an old SxS (12 or 20 guage) to cut down. How do I know if modern ammo is safe to shoot? Or should I just get one of thos Norinco coach guns?

    What exactly do you mean by "cut down"? If you mean saw it off, you shouldn't. There's no reason to ruin a perfectly good SxS. If you need a defense gun, get a Mossberg 500 w/pistol grip and a big tube.

    depends--you might hurt the value if you cut down a rare gun--if it has damascus or twist steel barrels you can't shoot modern ammo in it without sleeving the barrels. at the last gun show i went to there were tons of brazilian doubles that were sold at Kmarts and you can pick those up cheap and cut them down for coach style--or find a Stoeger coach gun or Rossi(which has the external hammers). I don't care for the chinese double coach guns--they are mediocre at best.

    Why get a side by side, when you can get a pump,or semi auto that can shoot five rounds?

    Folks just don't like lookin' down those two big tubes.

    I want one, also, but no exposed hammers.

    I don't care for those Norinco's at all (but to be honest I never shot one).

    There seem to be plenty of the Bakail's around that are already coachgun length.

    This is on my sniper list but I don't really need another SXS; You might not feel too bad about butchering it:

    Stoeger makes an affordable coach gun, blued or stainless.. Have one in 410. great little gun..

    By all means, don't cut down an older side-by-side. But in spite of those touring pumps and autos as defense guns, I still think a short side-by with exposed hammers is ideal for home use. You can load it, then set the hammers down, and set it behing the kitchen door. Only two shots, but the sound of those two hammers coming back is priceless, and has stopped many a confrontation. And, for home use, two 12 ga. shots will definitely clear the air.

    Why not buy a really nice double where the value has been destroyed because some idiot cut it down? Then you got the nice gun right where you want it at the right price, AND a clean concience.

    i have a SXS 16 that was cut down b/c some jacktard ran over it. now it is coach length. kicks hard real hard

    Besides that, the shorter the barrels, the louder the boom, and the closer to your ears. I cut the barrels on a beat-up old Crescent double to 22" (and restocked for proper fit), thinking the resulting cylinder bore chokes and the short length would make it a good rig for early grouse/woodcock hunting. It carried and swung okay, and the patterns were nice and wide, but shooting it was like setting off a flash-bang grenade in front of my face.

    I traded it in on something else. The shop owner said he bet somebody wanting a coach gun would glom onto it soon, and sure enough, a couple of weeks later he sold it. I have no idea what the new owner used it for or whether he kept it longer than I did or not.

    Where's the line that divides the man who would be stopped by a double from the man who would be stopped by a pump?
