    It is impressive but there are a number of mathematical constants (perhaps you could call them magic) that help with the squaring of large numbers. Using any number in the 500 range:
    The first two digits of the square are 25, the next two digits will be 10 times the last 2 digits and the last two places will be the square of the last two digits. You still need very good math skills to pull this off but it is not as amazing as it appears to be at first glance. My father, who was a mechanical engineer, was a brilliant student of mathematics and could multiply four digit numbers in his head with near perfect accuracy. My first wife, a chemist and chemical engineer, also has this ability as does my oldest girl (who is not related to my first wife). I tend to reach for my calculator more and more these days [:I].
