    There is a very good line in the film Fail Safe where the professor who is speaking to a group of military men states, "How long do you think the holocaust would have lasted if every Jew the Nazis went to drag out of his house had met them at the door with a gun in his hand"?

    Tell me about it. Both my grandpas fought in WWII, one in the Army, European theater. He was at D-Day, and everything. The other was in the Navy, on a sub, USS Archer-Fish, which if anyone knows any naval history, sunk the largest ship ever sunk by a sub, the Japanese carrier Shinano. My two second cousins Hank and Kasia were in Concentration camps as well.

    My husband knew a sweet older couple.....slow moving, pleasant, well dressed, very short, soft spoken. They each had bar-code tatoos on their arms.

    The sad thing is, humans have been doing this to one another since Cro-Magnon encountered and either exterminated or absorbed Neanderthal. Jews have been on the receiving end of more than their share of such atrocities -- but you find persons of every race and religion in both camps, victims and oppressors alike.

    The saddest thing is, to every perpetrator of and participant in mass murder, the circumstances of that particular moment are "different" from whatever has gone before. Those who hate need no justification for what they do -- but to get others to condone and even join in, they invoke patriotism, God, race, or whatever else will push people's buttons. Many of those who look back on events like the Holocaust, shaking their heads and commenting solemnly on the inhumanity of it all, will turn right around and invoke much the same rhetoric, tweaked and updated a little, protesting all the while that in spite of being nearly identical to what has happened before -- this time, somehow, it's "different".

    mongrel; you are absolutely right we need as a people Americans come out strongly and condemn any genocide sa it happens, not wait 60 years.
    Write your congressmen and senators and condemn the genocides going on today in Africa, there is no excuse that the UN is not send troops to africa, and there is no excuse that the american delegation isnt saying more to the UN about it.
    We are the largest single supporter of ais to the un 40% if what I read is correct, and yet we sit silent on the side of caution. if we took that money that we spend on the un we might not be as deep into this recession, I know it's not the only reason were in trouble but it don't help.

    The United States could have easily taken in the entire Jewish population of Europe rather than leaving them to the Nazis. Back in the late '30s this country was filled with people who screamed at the top of their lungs about how there were already too many "outsiders" living in the USA and that there was no room for any more. We are lucky that this mind set no longer exists in this day and age in our country (yeah, right).

    and yes, the holocaust was terrible. i shudder to think of what can happen when an entire nation of rational, civilized people can be so easily mislead. i pray that never happens to our nation again.

    yes...the jews suffered, and yes, if they had guns they would have been treated differently...and yes, i believe the united nations should be broken up..it is toothless and gutless, they usually wait until at least a million are dead before they step in and do anything about it, even then peace keeping troops have their hands tied with "rules of engagement"...rawanda is the perfect case..they knew what was happening 14 years ago today, and they did LESS than nothing!..they ordered the troops who were there not to interfere!there were australian peace keepers there who begged the united nations to change the rules of engagement and the request was refused, they were told not to interfere while people were being slaughtered in the refugee camps...and those soldiers still suffer stress related problems because of it..they were told they could only shoot if they were fired on first...the united nations was formed so that international troops could be sent very quickly to any place on earth and could stop genocide wherever it was happening! they have failed time and time again...it is time to get rid of it, i know in my time i refused the offer to take part in u.n. peace keeping operations!!..i told my c.o. straight out that if i saw any massacres happening i would shoot without hesitation!! needless to say i wasnt asked again!the united nations discusts me with their cowardness!!

    good for you, glad i never had to take that stand. we have had people over here refuse to but on the blue helmet, on the grounds that they signed up for the US military, and been court martialed for it.

    here it is volantary to serve with the u.n....or at least it was...i havnt heard of it changing! they wouldnt of had the guts to court martial me for refusing!..the media would have crucified them when it came out why i refused!...im just not capable of standing by and seeing innocent people being slaughtered and do nothing about it!i see no difference in doing nothing and say "i was obeying orders", and the nazi war crimes trials where nazi`s said "i was obeying my orders" !i rant and rave all the time that the united nations should be broken up...name one thing in the last 30 years that they have done that has saved lives...they always wait until its too late before they do anything!!its not the soldiers on the ground, they are good at their job...it is the politicians who stop them saving lives...another reason why i hate ALLPOLITICIANS!!!

    The United States has done a few thing in its history which don't look very good in hindsight. Your example is one of the worst. However, if you are comparing the Jews seeking sanctuary from the Nazis in the 1930s and 1940s with suggestions that we attempt to close the border with Mexico, I must disagree.

    All things considered, I think the performance of the United States was better than Europe in most cases.

    It was numbers...I have no idea why I put barcode down. My husband said he had known the man a very long time without ever knowing that the tatoo was there. The wife came in with her husband one day and had a short sleeve dress on. That is when he noticed it on her arm. She saw Larry glance at it and he apologized, she told him not to worry and that is when the husband pulled his sleeve up to show his. Larry said it was so shocking to see and think of what had happened that he just didn't know what to say.

    good to know, sorry if i was being a bit of a stickler for accuracy. i've never had the privilege of shaking a survivors hand, but i certainly would, given the opportunity.

    Eisenhower refused to meet the nazi generals as "gentleman soldiers". Wouldn't shake their hands.

    When he saw the camps first hand, he made all of the German townspeople see for themselves the atrocities.

    The US has had its share of dark moments, but we generally believe in, seek, and do good. On our worst day, we are 1000 times more civil and just than just about anyone else out there.

    You must have missed the numerous posts here which demand that we adopt the same tactics of terror and brutality as our enemies. Take the gloves off, drag people out of their homes, shoot a few as an example to others who resist our will, lock away those who remain without trial, torture them and then round up their families and do the same to them. Waterboard the whole lot!

    I know you arent allowed to ever say anything negative about Jews or else you get banned, censored, or fired but how come Jews get to always use the term "THE Holocaust" ? Its pretty arrogant and selfish for Jews to portray themselves as the ONLY people who have ever suffered. The FACT is there have been many holocausts throughout history but the Jews like to lay claim that they own the term and theirs was the worst.
    Jews always portray themselves as victims of some atrocity when they are no different then any other race or religion on this planet.

    Quite true but it was decided here early on (I guess by a secret vote) that in order to fight against HAIRY, who was endless in his critical views on Israel, that Jews would be a favored group here on GB. This is usualy followed up with a list of great Jewish accomplishments, how many Jews have won Nobel Prizes and a map which shows tiny Israel surrounded by Arab and Muslim nations. That same map aways manages to over look Armenia, a Christian nation who's people suffered their own holocaust.
