A proposal facing action by the U.S. Senate would force National Park and National Wildlife Refuge managers to allow more loaded, hidden handguns in America's National Parks and Wildlife Refuges, endangering the public as well as wildlife.
Why are we putting hikers, campers, and families at risk by introducing loaded, hidden handguns into our National Parks? This proposal is a bad idea that the Senate should reject.

Under current federal law, firearm possession and transportation in our National Parks is carefully regulated. But Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, an ally of the gun lobby, plans on offering an amendment to a broader bill on public lands issues that would weaken the reasonable gun restrictions on federal lands adopted in 1982 by the Reagan Administration.
Given the heightened security risks in the post-9/11 world, as well as contemporary concerns about poaching on federal lands, we find the Reagan Administration regulation to be both necessary and appropriate.
Tell your Senators to stand with the Association of National Park Rangers, the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees, and the U.S. Park Ranger Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, who recently stated: "Senator Coburn's amendment will make poaching in parks even more prevalent than it already is, thus reducing the opportunity for children, families, and Americans from all walks of life to easily view wildlife that so many parks provide."
Don't allow Senator Coburn to change federal law to expand the carrying of loaded guns in our National Parks!

We do a lot of camping with Black Bear in our campsite,on our cabin porch or around our tent.I will always have a loaded firearm within arms reach.This is in a national park.Park police cannot and will not be able to protect my family when that Bear decides to attack.My family don't even no I have it with me.They just no that dad will try to protect us
when something bad happens.Some laws are stupid and need to be broken.

Do they realize how large some of these parks are? They are not just camp grounds, and some very large critters live there too. Hunting is allowed in many of these areas, so this is just an attempt at stopping that too.

The reason this country is experiencing so many shooting incidents is strictly because idiots like you want to go around getting stupid laws passed to restrict the LAW-BIDING armed citizen from being able to protect himself and his family. At Virginia Tech, Colum,bine HS and the shopping malls and churches across this land, if someone had been present with a concealed weapon...none of this murder and mayhem would have occurred. The lady security officer at that church in Colo. Springs, Colo. is the quintessential example of the armed citizen stepping up and preventing another slaughter of innocent UNARMED citizens.....When was the last time up heard of a legally permitted CCW holder going into a public place and slaughtering innocent citizens....Hhhmmmmmmmmm..?? There has been a big story down here in North Carolina and Georgia for the past 2 months.
A 61 year old man had become homeless and was living in his van. He made a living by kidnapping and murdering people in National Forests. In October he killed an elderly couple who were hiking in the national forest near Brevard NC. On New Years Day he kidnapped and murdered a college girl who was hiking in the national forest in north Georgia.
In November a 46 year old nurse was kidnapped and decapitated in a national forest in north Florida, this guy is strongly suspected in that one. The guy would then get a couple hundred bucks from his victims' ATM cards.
In all cases firearms were prohibited in the areas where these people were hiking.

They would have you believe it is not currently legal to have a gun in a National Park. That is not so. Weapons only have to be unloaded and cased. In essence there already are weapons IN the parks, they just can't be carried. But if need/desire arises and time permits it is not inconceivible that a weapon legally stored may pulled out and illegally used in a park . I do think there is some justification to the idea that some wildlife will be unnecessarily killed as some pople that are not familiar with wildife may not be able to read an animals intentions. 0 -
For several years, my best friend and I would take our sons, and hike sections of the Appalachian Trail on weekends, camping along the way. In addition to gorp, firestarters, and marshmallows, BOTH of our rucksacks held a 1911A1 and an extra mag. It is a LONG way to get to a phone to call 911 out there. 0
