Did my taxes last night
I almost laughed when asked if I wanted to contribute to the campaign fund...

I agree but isn't it frustrating that of all the money we pay for taxes, we're only allowed to decide where $3 of it goes? 0 -
I use Turbo Tax each year and it remembers to check the box NO. Smart computer. [:D] Getting $172 back. That's pretty close, zero is better. 0 -
I've been thinking of getting the turbo tax program. It usually costs about $3-500 for us to get our taxes done each yr. Its a bit confusing with the business....three kids....odd expenses....new house purchase. I think I just talked myself out of the idea of doing it with a program myself. I guess I'll call soon and get my appointment. 0 -
Last year we got back over $2G. THAT is a problem, so I made a change in my witholding, shooting for zero. I got pretty close; we are only getting back a little over $200 this year. 0 -

That $3 doesn't come off your return.0 -
Since we all pay the wages of our senators and congressmen through taxation.. shouldn't we be able to claim them as dependants??[B)] 0 -

I thought money you get back is usually the amount that was overpaid and not taxes.0 -

We(me and spider)are refering to the $3 presidential re-election campaign fund donation at the top ot the form.
They say if you check the box to donate $3 it doesn't reduce your return/refund.
I do my own taxes form 1040 and had it in the mail on 1-25 this year.
Can't see wasting $$$ to pay someone just to fill out the 1040,schedules A&B,and to figure the child tax credit.
And to think some pay to have their taxes done and even get that advanced loan to boot.[xx(]0 -

Yes I know it doesn't come off the refund. My point was the $3 was TAX money, Return was not. (ie Spider was talking about getting to choose where tax money gets spent. You start talking about return money, which is not tax money.)0 -
I owe just over $5k this year, OUCH!!!! 0 -

File a Schedule A, itemize the heck out of it.
You'd need about $40K of legitimate deductions, though.
I would have owed $2600 with the standard deduction, but with itemized deductions,
we're getting $600 back. And about the same on the state taxes.0 -
Unfortunately I could not come up with enough deductions when adding family med bills, daycare, realestate tax, and interest.
My wife took an early payout of retirement, and asked them to hold back $15k for tax. We did not notice when the check came in that they had only withheld $10k, and thus we still owe the last $5,000. Remove that from the equation, and we would have owed just a couple hundred.0 -
Looks like I hit it much close than most of you. $25 back. But for me thats a real good thing cause I've owed the last few years.
State will get me another gun about $900 back. I have not figured out how to get that one lower.0 -
Let me get this straight...it's BAD to get too much back? If so, that means it's BETTER to have that money divided by 52 (paychecks) and you'll be seeing it a little at a time. And spending it a little at a time.
Nothing wrong with a big return. To me, it's an enforced savings. Joe
EDIT: To clarify, I'm a retired Federal annuitant. I can dictate to the dollar how much, if at all, is removed from my monthly ret. checks. I elect to have much more removed. I'm paying my bills. And after the holidays, and get my return, I pay the holiday debts off, and buy something nice from the gunstore. Joe0 -
Well a lot of people feel its better for them to have the money than The government. What they say is you will get more from interest than you would by having it sit with Uncle Sam.
But how many actually will put the amount not sent in and save it so their interest will grow.
Not me.
But me only getting back $25 is a real good thing That means I did not pay at the end of the year and have even less for Guns(or other things). Looks like my State return will get me a Taurus 1911 Stainless.0 -
For those that aren't fiscally disciplined enough to invest extra income during the year instead of spending it, the government's no interest savings plan is probably best!
We are in our second year of retirement and we're still adjusting to income and spending levels, so it looks like we will owe about $11K this year!0 -

I think the idea is that it's better to land at zero because that way you're getting your money all during the year, and you can earn interest on it. If you don't, the government gets to use your money all year before giving it back to you.0 -
You did check the box that said support the illegals with my tax money RIGHT[:(!] 0 -
Bhale - you don't have to itemize to use daycare expenses. Those are credits, not deductions. You may want to rethink that one. 0 -
paying 2355...im soooooooooooo happy 0 -
After all is said and done, I'll have paid about 30K in taxes this year, I'm looking for a better CPA. 0 -
I'm still waiting for my updated brokerage statements,........am in no hurry to see the result!
No,.....I do NOT contribute to the campaign thingy![xx(]0 -
My refund is already in the bank. Don 0 -
I would have owed, but the new baby gave me a refund. 0
