16" M1A
Sorry if this a bit of a long story.
I had wanted a nice M1A for a long time and picked up a decent one just over a year ago. This one is a SAI standard rifle with NM bbl and synthetic stock from 98'. Just before christmas I picked up another SAI in what would be a "loaded" with SS bbl and Laminate stock from 99'. On the new gun I am putting a Sadlak mount and IOR scope on for a "target" version.
I got to fondle a EBR stock at a gun show and really liked it so I decided to buy one and put my synthetic rifle in that stock. Well I got it and the top rail does not fit as apparently I have a medium weight bbl on this gun. Well doing drills in the house with the gun mounted (with out top rail) in the EBR it is painfully obvious that I need a shorter bbl. Prior to seeing the EBR I was going to buy a DSA 16" "tactical" to fill this roll, but I am over that now.
I have been debating between 18" and 16" and have decided that 16" is what I am looking for. I have decided this as the OAL of the 16"/EBR is the same as my 16" AR and that is the size I am looking for.
I have 2-3 choices how to do this, and not sure which is best.
1. Take the gun and have it re-barreled, can this be done as I believe the gas system is a bit different? I would then sell off the the old parts. Is this cost effective?
2. Sell the synthetic and buy a 16" gun. Is the SOCOM the only 16" gun? Are there good and bad versions of the SOCOM based on parts used? Do the older ones use more/any GI parts like the rifle versions?
3. Just buy a new 16" gun. I can afford it but I don't think I would get much use out of the synthetic rifle and the funds could be used else where.
