Cost of Iraq War
Its rising every day, within the next 2 months we should hit 500 billion, i believe.

It wouldn't be so bad if there had actually been some sort of benefit to it.
Sadly, the "benefits" we've seen are 3000+ dead, thousands more wounded and maimed, and a diversion from Afghanistan that has given the Taliban and Al Qaeda time and space to regroup.[xx(]
And while I'm sure the folks here remember who Bin Laden is, wouldn't it have been nice if the White House did as well?0 -

That is the difference, you elect to look at the war as snapshot of sorts, you choose to freeze it in time, and then pretend if all else goes untouched, no harm will ever come from that.
That is a relatively easy way for people to view things. And it is easy for some people to understand and relate to that "snapshot" of things.
It is far more difficult to ignore the snap-shot image, and to look years, decades, and perhaps even centuries into the future and attempt to forecast what you have to do today, not just to ensure a secure America tomorrow, but decades from now.
If you elect not to look at things like this because you prefer to look at the snap-shot, the what did it cost me today? Then neither I, nor any other intelligent American will be able to pry you away from the rhetoric that you are electing to accept as fact.
Further the clock is sort of a smoke-and-mirrors thing. How much of that 500 billion is going right back into the American economy, logistics, defense contractors, technology, all benefiting from those dollars.
Your 401K probably has a Boeing, Lockheed, Textron, or maybe a medical research company, all taking contracts asked for by the U.S. and feeding what is the machine of the American economy, and the global economy.
It is tought to talk serious economics with someone who doesn't even have a fundamental understanding of how the global economy is driven.
You see a big number = automatically bad, and full of waste, well that's probably all you're ever going to be able to see.
Further warriors fan you stated that our presense has only made things worse.

I think that the idea that because some of the money being spent on the war is coming back here is a bit of an overstatement, while I'm pretty sure thats theres some of that tricklin going on. the majority of the funds are going elsewhere and there going there twice, first if you think of the 1/4 to 1/2 billion $$ aday it costs us. were also taking a lot of that and putting on our M/C and visa's. because we are now closing in on a trillion $$ in debt I'm not sure how many zeros that is but I know its giong to take a long long timr to repay it. Not only are we aquiring that debt but it is being aquired by our enimies, countrys that have a less then good fealings toward us.
What happens when china and russia,venezuala control our energy, manufacturing,and other war related busisnesses. Imean to me it looks like we paying them to fight us, that dosen't make a lot of sense to me. we were lied to in order to go into afganastan, and then Iraq. if we would have went in and bombed both of those places back into the dark age we it would have been cheaper. then on top of the $$ cost, we have the loss of face in the world communty our so called allies send 600 soliders and they become part of a (coilition)what a sdklthkn joke these are American wars where American boys and girls are dying for a political cause not a real threat.
These wars will take a toll on our economys for many years to come.0 -
Money well spent. Liberals want the money to spend on loser welfare programs, but I prefer this. Now the world knows that America will kick down doors of scum that mess wih us and root out evil anywhere. Many benefits have come, and will yet come from the war. Sad the libs just can't see past their next welfare check.

I don't think it's a waste. Sure, I was only there for 7 months, and didn't personally die for my country, but a few of my friends did. I bet the Iraqi girls who are allowed to go to school now are glad we're there. I bet the families of those who are in Sadaam's mass graves are glad we went over there and removed him from power. If we keep a presence like we have in Germany, Korea, and Japan, I don't think it's a waste.
If what Sadaam did was never worth us going to war with him, then how was it enough for him to be put to death?0 -
Will it ever come to the point that we've extended ourselves so much (militarily) that we're going to have to be selective in where we commit large scale combat troops? In other words, we're eventually going to spread ourselves too thin, and have to rethink this whole global "bailout" scheme.
Sometime in the future, if we continue as we have since the Marshall Plan, we won't be able to meet all threats, all the time. We're borrowing money on a credit card that will eventually max-out.
Someday, creditors are going to deny us. Been borrowing too long. Bad risk. Joe0 -

There's another thread floating here somewhere which says illegal immigrants cost the US $383 Billion a year, so there is a possible offset to a war which serves our national interests. 0 -

I wonder if he is so easy to find, why the russians did not find him, heck they are not even saddled with that whole geneva convention thing, and waterboarding is a joke to them.........0 -
if ever osama bin laden is caught i would hope they keep it secret, then no-one will whinge and whine when they get the information out of him that they would like to get...when they were finished with him they could just dump his body somewhere and drop a bomb and say "wow! we got him with a bomb!" problem solved, no whinging about what happened to him in custody or whether his human rights were violated! 0 -
