KIRKWOOD, Mo. -- A gunman opened fire at a city council meeting in this St. Louis suburb Thursday night, hitting the mayor and several city officials, a newspaper reported. There was no immediate word on whether anyone was killed.
Police shot the gunman, who had hit Kirkwood Mayor Mike Swoboda, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which had a reporter at the meeting.
Also shot were a police officer, council members Michael H.T. Lynch and Connie Karr, and Public Works Director Kenneth Yost, the correspondent, Janet McNichols, told the newspaper.
The victims were taken to St. John's Mercy Hospital, but Kirkwood police told The Associated Press no one was available to provide information. St. Louis County police did not return several calls.
The reporter said the 7 p.m. meeting had just started when the gunman rushed into the council chambers yelling and opened fire with at least one weapon. He started yelling "shoot the mayor" while walking around and firing, hitting a police officer first, the reporter said.
McNichols also said the shooter fired at the city attorney, who tried to fight off the attacker by throwing chairs. The gunman then moved behind a desk where the council sits and fired at council members.
About 30 people were in the council chambers, the reporter said.
Dozens of emergency vehicles were on the scene, and an area of several blocks was cordoned off along a busy north-south corridor around City Hall.
Kirkwood is about 20 miles southwest of downtown St. Louis. City Hall is in a quiet area filled with condominiums, eateries and shops, not far from a dance studio and train station.
Mary Linehares, a teacher who lives about four blocks from City Hall and who walked down to the scene with her husband, described the town as quiet and eclectic.
"It's like a small town in St. Louis," Linehares told The Associated Press. "You can call it Mayberry."

2 killed in florida...think its murder suicide....the country is in a terrible state and ppl are scared, worried...killing is the reaction to it....0 -
All of this right in the middle of campaigning and elections. Doesnt matter who gets in now...there will be an outcry from the anti-gun crowd to ban ALL private ownership of firearms. Not just pistols, not just "assault weapons", not just semi-autos...ALL OF THEM.
Whoever gets in the Whitehouse will sell us out and take away the 2nd Amendment.0 -
I would have thought increased police presence at the meeting would have prevented this. I guess I would have been wrong. 0 -

Not that I am in any way making excuses for that murderer, but I can understand how he'd get pissed off over parking. In some places parking ordnances are so ridiculous and fees so high that I must admit I have wanted to lynch those responsible. But then again thinking violent thoughts and acting on them are two separate issues. 0 -
word has it he has been harassed over parking in front of his own home, he was having his driveway repaved, and apparently it was against code for him to park on the street, and was ticketed for other code violations
i may be mistaken, it was ether kirkwood or neighboring maplewood, but when missouri passed the ccw law they said they would not honor it, and anyone carrying will have their guns confiscated for a minimum of 3 days while they run a trace on each and every firearm, their decisions was of course over ruled by a judge
sad that the police officers where victims, but i have mixed feelings about thug politicians, i've had my share of dealing with them, to bad that all across the country they will second guess hoe they treat individuals for about a month, then it will turn into anti-gun agenda, this is the exact reason they want to take them away, not because me or you may get shot, but they want to be free to pass what ever laws they want and not be held accountable0 -
