Questions & Advice Re Vacation Policy
The place where I'm working now has this great vacation policy. You get so much time off for every week you work. The longer you are there on the job the more time you accumulate every week. At this point I have over two weeks of vacation time and by the end of the year, I'll have another two weeks of time accumulated. They're real great about patting themselves on the back about their great vacation policy and all the other wonderful stuff they do for their workers. In reality, things are a little different. We're now in the middle of a three month long process of picking our vacation times and the procedure they have in place for selecting vacation is constructed so that I will not have any vacation this year, or next or the year after or the year after that. As best as I can tell, unless you're a close friend of the boss or been there longer than hades, you "get" all sorts of vacation time, you just can't use it. I'm grateful for the job, but it just don't seem right.

Doesn't sound good. I worked for a company that didn't pay overtime but gave us comp time. The problem was that we were always short handed and we never got to use our comp. When I got married they made a big deal about how they were going to give me the Monday after the wedding off like it was some kind of benefit. I had a about 2 weeks of comp time built up at that point but they made themselves out to be angels because they let me use one day. I quit about a month after that. 0 -
The place I work for use to give X per year on Jan 1. Now we have gone to PTO and earn X per pay week ([:(!])
so you have to save your time to go on vacation.
and if you get canned you lose all the time saved.0 -

DUDE!!! If U go to your state "wage an hour" office, they will HAVE TO Pay you "BACK-OT" I know, because i did it.It turned-out to be a cool tax-free(they had to pay it) $4500!![:D]
On second thought, i think i did pay incometax on it,but it was still like "FOUND-MONEY"!!0 -
Surely they'd have to pay you your vacation time if you quit? 0 -
I would call the wage and labor board after the boss is given to chance to schedule your vacation time or pays for it. 0 -
Lots of companies like that. If you don't mind maybe losing your job, fight it, as some have said. FedEx is another just like it. When I got married, they graciously let me have one night off to make it to the rehearsal dinner. Got married on Saturday in another state, had to be back at work on Monday. And had 3 weeks of built up vacation. Told me if I took a week not to bother coming back as "operational needs" over-rode my needs. I was newly married and needed the job. I was back on Monday. 0 -
Dr. Suck and Dr. Jew......You guys need a radio show. If you do sick the wages and labor board on them, you will get results. 0 -

I work for the state in education, so not only do I get regular time off, but I also get spring break and the winter holiday time off. So I just had a 2 1/2 week paid vacation, and in a month and a half I'll get another week... and I'll accumulate 3 more "regular" weeks off this year... 0 -
Not if the companys employee handbook states different.

It doesn't even have to be in a handbook. If a practice becomes acceptable within a business and is adhered to as policy, then whether it is written or not, it becomes policy.0
