I just had some appraised for an estate, I was told they are only worth the value of the silver at the time.
Unless they are uncirculated I wouldn't pay $20.00 for one. I was quoted 7 or 8 dollars each.

Most morgans are only worth melt. Right now that's about $12-$13 each.
If you find one/some that are MS and haven't been cleaned they may be worth $17-$25 on a good day.0 -
Paying $20 for $9 worth of silver is not a smart move. 0 -
Right now silver = $16/oz.
Each morgan(not severly worn)has about 3/4oz of siver.
So .75x16=$12
But most coin dealers are paying 10x face for silver coins right now.
Yes they're worth slightly more than $10 but that's how they make $$$.0 -

If you do with that many you might get lucky and have a few scarce morgans in the bunch. So go through them just to be sure if you ever sell.
The most common "scarcity" will be the CC morgans.

They are worth melt, no more. That is $12.00 per dollar. You can can buckets of Morgans at melt or BELOW at the next large coin show in your area.

Not worth it. Silver Eagles, which each have a full ounce of silver, can be had for around $18-19 apiece if you look around. 0 -

The mint mark is on the back(reverse)under the eagles tail above the DO in dollar.
There are other valuable dates but the CCs are my favorite.

I'm sure I would!! I love the morgans the best because of their detailed devices and the "old west era" nostalgia behind them. Especially the CCs but they carry a premium but there still plenty of morgans around. There's a good reason for that too.0 -
BTW Marc: That is one beautiful dimple Morgan! Its book is around $600 but jumps to $1500 in the next grade (65). It might be worth a resubmit to PCGS. Almost certainly it would go 65 at NGC.
I have several ranked sets of Morgans at PCGS. I have 2 1883cc's in MS65 but they are not DMPLs!
Let me know if you ever want to trade it for an MS65.0 -

The rule of thumb is NEVER buy coins offered on TV....
As for most Morgan Silver Dollars only being worth melt....That is what a dealer will offer as they hope to find some variety, VAM or low mintage coin in the group. IF they offer melt, understand they already have an outlet where they will make money from them.
The only coins that should be sold for melt are the common date coins in lower grades.0 -
Old Morgans are being sold and bought on auctions right now everyday for just average condition in the $13- $18 range. 0 -
81 most common date coins in AU are only worth melt also.
One also has to remember that the more worn a coin the less silver content it has. So don't just count your coins and multiply by 10 to figure their value.
Before anyone cashes in coins I recomend buying a book or googling to find out the scarcer date coins. But remember the book value is retial and a dealer or collector will never pay that price. A good rule of thumb, and I go by this too is take 70-75% of book value and that will be close to what the coin or set of coins really is.0 -

I just pick up some old ones for a few bucks at coin shows. They aren't worth anything but melt but someday when my great grand kids find a box of 1000 Morgans it might be worth more as melt 0 -

If you are looking for investment in silver, buy bullion. You can get 1 troy ounce bars or 1 lb bars for the going price of silver. I have invested in BU Morgan rolls. Probably have several thousand invested, grand kids education. Most rolls are 1880's "O"mint Have a roll of 1878 "S" mint in BU Condition. Invest in bullion. When I started the price of silver was around 3 bucks an ounce and not 16 bucks but you have to hold onto them for a several years. Good Luck, hope this helps. Shop yahoo or ebay for rolls. 0
