.223 Remington

With ammo prices increasing I have decided that I am going to trade off a couple of my rifles for a "real nice" .223. Guessing what I will get for a trade-off, I am guessing I will have around $900 to spend on the .223. So, if you guys had up $900 to get a good bolt action .223(with a heavy bbl.), what would you choose and why?

--I already have a Bushmaster and that is why I am looking for a bolt action.

    I have a Rem 700 vls .223 it is BAD ASS it will shoot .25 groups all day long

    I know people will say Remmington's quality control is lacking but mine is a great shooter and has been since I was breaking in the barrel it will shoot about any junk moa[:D]

    Not going to hear me bashing a Remington anytime soon(unless of course it deserves bashing). Two of my favorite rifles I own are Remington 700's. I know that it only has a medium contour barrel, but this model is really catching my eye at the moment. Anybody have any experience or heard anything about them?

    If I had that much to spend I would take a look at the Savage Tactical heavy barrel in 223. I have one and you can cover a five shot group with a nickle any day. Just pick out a good scope to sit on top of it and enjoy the crap out of it.

    I would go with a Remington...either the LVSF, or the XR100. They are both shooting machines.

    Edit:
    That XR-100 Rangemaster, is nothing but a production version of the 40X. The one I shot in 223, has an 8-36 power Weaver on it. At 300 yards on a dead calm day, using the Remington 62 grain match loads, I printed 2 groups that were under 1/2". I couldn't believe it.

    I'd just get a really nice target grade upper for the Bushy...

    Failing that, for a bolt 223, I'd look at one of the savages with the accutrigger, or maybe a nice single shot Encore or similar.

    I have a Rem. XR 100. It is a single shot, bolt action and was dammmmed accurate right out of the box! Great rifle.

    Stay away from the remingtons, their quality control has been severly lacking for the past year or so.

    I would personally go with the Savage 12LRPV, but all of the other are also great rifles.

    I like all of the above but my Ruger MKII .223 is as good consistant long range gun with a heavy barrel.

    Tikka T-3 varmint would be my first choice actually.

    CZ 527 Varmint. 3/4" groups or less are the norm and some deliver REALLY small 1 hole groups. I have one and 1/2" are the norm and 1/4" are there if I do my part. The triggers (single set) are awsome and mine set is at 1 lb crisp. I have seen alot of quality control problem with the Remingtons lately. In the last year I have had to square actions to barrels, square bolt faces and crown barrels of about 30 rifles before they would shoot under 2" groups (got 'em down to around 3/4"-1" groups). With them selling out I would wait and see. My second choice would be a Savage with the accu-trigger, real fine guns at basement price. As stated put a quality scope on it or be prepared to be disappointed.

    Go to a gunshow and look around. The high dollar rifles don't seem to be selling good, and most of the dealers I know that have them will make a great deal to get rid of one. Sako, Sauer, Weatherby seem to be the best deals right now. Does the $900 include a scope?? If it does, then a nice used rifle is probably the way to go. Don't discount the lighter barrels on some of the nice rifles. They shoot good groups too.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys. Not really sure what I am going to do yet, but I will let ya know what I decide on.

    Take a look at the new T/C Icon. I'm not sure if it comes in .223 but that is one sweet looking gun with alot of inovation built into it.

    have to vote for the savage model 12. i do have aremmy new in 2004 in model 7 243 and it is a great rifle.

    Today is your lucky day! If you have $900 save a few more and get a real on hole gun with style![:p] Yes, Remmington, Savage, and a few others make the cut for me, But if I am going spend that much cash-

    Buy a Savage with accutrigger and spend 500.00 on a scope.
    I got some good advice about 5 years ago from someome a lot smarter than me. Most rifles can outshoot the owners. I bought a 700 SPS 300 WSM ($400.00) and a 500.00 piece of glass for it and good rings.(900.00)Shoots as good as a 700.00 Remington that I would have to have put a 200.00 scope on, but I can see alot better.

    Just got back from drooling at the local Scheels and narrowed it down to two. The Remington 700 LV SF and the Tikka Varmint. Both have heavy barrels for prarie dogs, yet are fairly light rifles to carry for coyote hunting, etc.
