Weapon safety rules
I've been on this board a little while now, and I don't think weapon safety is talked about nearly enough. Sure, we post stories and videos and pictures of negligent discharges, but seldom do we actually recite the rules for weapon safety. Do a search for firearm or weapon safety, and you'll be surprised at how few entries there are.
As all Marines out there (and most of the other branches too, I hope) know, every time we do any weapon training, we recite the 4 safety rules. As everybody knows, accidents and negligent discharges still happen. But they're less likely to be harmful or fatal if these rules are followed.
1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
2. Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.
3. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
4. Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire.
And I'll add one of the NRA rules that is slightly redundant, but important to keep in mind:
5. Be sure of your target and aware of it's background.
Others are welcome to contribute your rules as well. Safety is why I have guns in the first place.
Remember, you can get away with breaking one or two of these rules occasionally and not get hurt. Very few of my weapons even have a safety switch.
You might possibly get away with breaking 3 of the rules occasionally. But if you completely discard them and habitually break the rules, you are putting yourself and others in serious danger.
