What are your thoughts on the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the small Diesel

    Jeep = Chrysler = Interesting engineering

    I have not heard any comments about this engine. I have been driving diesel cars since 1976 and recommend them as a alternative to gas. Will ask around our diesel owners.

    The Liberty diesel wasn't a hot seller and was discontinued.

    Find yourself a used Liberty Diesel and save yourself $20,000.

    The problem with the Liberty Diesel is that they wouldn't offer a manual transmission, so you missed out on the fuel savings potential.

    The Grand Cherokee diesel is the Mercedes 3.0 V6 diesel but with a particulate trap.
    Very torquey engine. Good reputation.

    Find out how much the exhaust filter/particulate trap costs to replace, IIRC on the Dodge-em trucks it's something in the $3K range to replace one.

    Since when did Americans decide driving a stick to save 1mpg was a necessity?

    I wish they made a small diesel engine for the Nissan. I have heard that they do in some foreign countries.
    You could have a little 2.5 diesel with a turbocharger, I bet you could get 30 mpg and have lots of power, too.

    Back during the early gas crisis, Toyota made a little pickup with a diesel. I bought one, as I recall it was a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder, not turbocharged. I bought this one new in 1983.
    It was a pretty nice little engine, although sluggish.

    I hear rumors of a Diesel Renegade coming out from Jeep in the future that is supposed to get some decent mpg's.

    its basically a 'benz 'motor v6 ,a detuned 3.2cdi, good solid robust & very quiet & torquey ......good for 32+ mpg ...serviced will do 500,000 mile +

    I haven't heard about the Cherokee's if it the same TDI diesel that was/is in the liberties it will suck. 30-40 mpg in town 15 on the freeway. [xx(]

    Some years ago - early 80s?? - Dodge imported a little turbo diesel pickup from Mitsubishi, I think.

    Had a friend with one - he claimed 46mpg and plenty of power.

    I'd like to find one and restore it.

    Oh, yeah - it was also a 5 speed stick 4X4.

    mond...the EPA rating on the "new" Cherokee diesel is only 19/23. Not really worth it IMHO. The problem with the Liberty is that the engine couldn't meet the new emissions standards that came into effect. They sold a boat load of them, over 11,000. It wasn't too bad on mileage, 22/27. But would tow 5000 pounds. That beats my Cherokee to death! In a couple of years, I hope to pick up a used one.

    Heres a idea for cherokee deisel retrofit. Back in the 70's the International Scouts had an optional inline6 diesel, it was an inline 6, nonturbo. They are hard to find but should be an easy swap into a cherokee that had a I6. I had a 74 scout about6-7 years ago. I drove it back and forth to work , 65 mile round trip 6 days a week for 10.00 worth of fuel. Didnt have much power but it was the cheapest on gas-fuel i have ever owned.Wish i still had it.[:(]

    Oh i forgot it was factory and had a 727 TorqueFlite tranny behind it, also original.
