A Happy Ending
First time today, I had to take out my rifle. We got a call from a lady in a nearby city. She said she had been on the phone with her ex-husband, who lives in our city. She said he had been depressed and had threatened to kill their three children and himself. She even said she heard the sound of gunshots over the phone. Uh-oh.
So, we went and surrounded the house. The man came out when ordered to, and was proned out, cuffed and stuffed in a car. Asked about his children, he said they were all in the house. So, we called to the children to come out, calling them by name. They didn't come out. Again, we called, and they still didn't come out. Uh-oh.
Finally, the kids did come out and they were all right. They had been absorbed in their homework in the kitchen toward the rear of the house, and unaware of any commotion.
Turns out that ex-wife MAY have misunderstood her ex-husband, and may have interpreted his applying a paddle to a backside to get a kid to do his homework as the sound of a gunshot.
Anyhow, no one was hurt and I was glad.

I'm proud to know you guys would be there to defend my children with whatever force was needed to do so. I can only imagine how your heart sank when the kids first failed to appear.

Had a similiar situation about 5 years ago, only the wife was in the same house with the suicidal hubby. We get there, take positions and I had my patrol rifle out, a Mak 90 with 3-9x40 Bushnell. I had the only weapons mounted optics and could see through the blinds. To my horror, I watched as the husband put a Colt Anaconda to his wife's head and pulled the hammer back. I advised my Sgt., who in turn notified our Sheriff and requested permission to "end" the threat. The Sheriff, in his infinite wisdom, told us to hold fire unless fired upon. I had a clean shot of less than 30 yards and had to watch all this unfold. After an hour "standoff", both husband and wife came out of the house. Wife said nothing happened and did not want to press charges. I, as the only witness to the incident and the wife's unwillingness to prosecute, the Sheriff said no arrest. Well, about 3 hours later, 15 minutes after I got off shift, the Husband takes the .44, wakes his wife up and says, "Honey, watch this", as he promptly blows his brains into the front yard, splattering brains and blood all over his wife. I lost all faith in my administration (read Sheriff) after that. Comes to find out that the guy had been diagnosed with bi-polar and manic depression about 6 months prior and the Dr. recommended all weapons be removed from the house in a court order which was still on the judges desk. Go figure. 0 -
At least he got his kids to do their homework. Education is important.

I'm amazed the guys' .44 was not taken away from him(at least for the night for him to cool off) after an incident like that-Any chance the guy was a friend of that Sheriff?0 -
Unfortunately, no "crime" was committed and we where not aware of the unsigned court order, so no probable cause to take the gun away, per the Sheriff. They should have, all 20+ of them, SHOULD have, but weren't. There were rumors of a lawsuit by the guy's family, but nothing ever came of it. 0 -

nunn, I'm guessing you'll hear from this family again. It's a pretty long stretch from "Go do your homework" to "I'm going to kill myself and the kids". Either she is trying to set him up, maybe a custody case, or he is lying. No way to know which, but I doubt that it's over. 0 -
glad to hear that no one was hurt. my wife and i arrived in Los Angelas today at around four our time,(indiana) by the time we got to the hotel, there was a peice on the news about a standoff here in L.A that ended with one swat member killed in the line of duty, havent got all the details. Its never a good thing when one is held up, or thought to be held up in an abode with a firearm. not only does it oft turn out badly, but, it does nothing to further our cause. it just feeds fuel to the anti-gunners fire.
i am glad that no one was hurt, thats the main thing

Well, unlike Paul Harvey, I can't give you "the rest of the story."
The incident wound down coincidental to the end of my shift. The dad was in an oncoming officer's car. I was released to go home, so I did. I presume that the dad was released, but when I left, investigators were still interviewing the children.
If the mom made the whole story up, I figure she will be dealt with.0 -
