Afghani War Rug
I have a Russian occupation-vintage (1980?) wool Afghani war rug, approximately 2 1/2'x3 1/2', with helicopters, tanks and soldiers on the borders and a big AK-47 in the middle. Anybody know the value of these? Thanks.

Thanks for the site. These rugs were made specifically to finance yearly pilgrimages from Afghanistan to Mecca and Medina. I bought this one in Riyadh in the early 90's.0 -

From what I heard these rugs all tell a story. That would expain the tanks and stuff. If you are looking to get rid of it shoot me a price. 0 -

Hand made Persian rugs vary greatly in value.
War rugs are not as desirable as the traditional styles.
It's value depends on many factors. Some of which are:
Knot count : The number of knots per square inch. The higher the knot count the better the quality and the longer it takes to make = more valuable.
Size: Larger = more valuable
Materials: Silk pile is best, Wool pile is better and Cotton foundation is preferred over a wool foundation. the foundation is what the pile fibers are knotted to.
Dies and colors: Natural vegtable dies are preferred to synthetic dies. Muted earth tone colors sell better than bright vibrant ones.
I have seen small war rugs sell for as little as $35 to $40

Apples and oranges. These are comparatively crude, handmade folk rugs made from natural fibers and dyes by artisans who are not weavers by trade. Authentic period war rugs (not the latter day $35-$40 dollar ca-ca you cite) went from $500-$3500+ even when I bought mine back in 1993 or 1994.0 -
