Alaska and FMJ bullets
I know that here in WI, it is illegal to deer hunt with FMJ(non-mushrooming) type bullets. Does anybody know what the laws read for hunting in Alaska with these bullets? Reason I am asking is because I found a place that is running a good deal on some ammo for my .375.

better question is why would you want to hunt with ammo that injures instead of killing? cuz its cheaper? to have an aniaml run off after you shoot it to not find it and waste your tag on is alot more expensive,especially a trip to alaska, then spending a few extra bucks to take whatever it is down that your shooting 0 -
If the animal has and entrance wound and an exit wound from a FMJ he will bleed out fast. It's just as good as a round that causes hemorrhage. 0 -
I agree with Ruger. Sometimes, penetration is more important than expansion.

That there has to be a law is what I find incredible. If you are trying to win a battle with the deer or whatever it is you are hunting it doesn't even make sense. Deer don't go back for their wounded. 0 -
You could go the Alaska Game and Fish website and find the answer.
I imagine that FMJ ammo is illegal, I have read the regs for 4 or 5 states and it is illegal in every one I checked on.0 -
I always thought that it was illegal because of the increased chances of ricochet?

LOL no way is that mine--I was sent those pics by a friend years ago--and I am sure he got them off the net too. It is a nice bear though. It had killed someone and was stalking that hunter who was hunting Moose. I do have a pic of the dead guy who has been gnawed on but I don't think it would be appropriate to post it here as it is quite graphic. 0 -

Im not an African hunter nor am I an expert on bullets other than my own experiance and by what I read and see. I have see water buff. hide an inch thick though. and to me a mushrooming bullet would have a hard time making it to any vitals. there is a big difference between African game and North American game. In my own experiance with heavier jacketed bullets on coyotes say.. Ive seen them run off and get lost. so Swung the pendulum all the way to the other side, to some super explosives,tips Great for prarie dogs but on coyotes they expanded on the fur and just created a superficial wound although a big hole. the trick is to gear for what your going after and your caliber velocity, bullet weight. personally I like to do as much damage inside and transfer as much energy as possible once inside.0 -

My old fox hunting buddy always used solids in his 22/250. And without fail, we'd end up chasing a wounded one around half a day. I never had that problem using a soft point.
Now Africa, my best friend has been on 6 different trips over there and collected most of the plains game. Now he just goes for buff, nothing else matters. He's told me time and again, the critters over there take a special kind of killing. They're tougher than nails. He shot one buff 6 times with a .416 rem mag with 400 solids, all shots killing shots in the boiler room. It kept coming back for more, 2 rounds from a .500-3-1/4" nitro between the shoulders finally settled things. Dave0 -
I would have to surmise that shot placement with a FMJ would be even more so crtical than with soft points, hp's or other types of rounds. I guess a perfect shot on a large animal would be necessary, or possibly a head shot, not something I would want to try and perfect on a 1,000+ lb Grizzly Bear. 0 -
