Top to bottom we have an Anschutz lefty,a Winchester 52,a Stevens Walnut Hill, a Winchester 1885, then we have three of my Marlin Ballards the top being a 45/110 2&7/8,then a 38/55 and finally probably the most accurate rifle I have ever seen in 22lr. The scopes are Unertl's except the massive one which was an experimental sniper scope that the military ended up taking a pass on. It is one of only a few ever made and is crystal clear even in very low light. 0 -

Looks like the scope on the Win 52 is a Lyman Super Target Spot, or are the rings just not Unertl?

...Ok, Ive seen those scopes (w/spring) a LOT, but have never heard anyone say WTH the spring on the tube behind the front ring is for? I know the tension is adjustable with a ring w/a set screw. Is/was it an early attemp at keeping the scope from moving in the rings? The problem with that, is that I have only seen these scopes mounted on .22's, usually target .22's...and the recoil of course is negligable.
...Looks similar to the scope (the LONG one) my Dad carried onto Utah Beach on an 03, but sans the spring.

The scope does move forward and backward under recoil. The tensioning spring is to keep it from moving backwards far enough to bash you in the eye. I usually remove the spring on 22's since it doesn't move enough to worry about. 0 -

That Ballard was shooting one clean hole while Winchester was still trying to perfect the lever action. Actually that paricular Ballard is a custom from the Pope and Peterson Gunshop, Denver CO. shortly after Peterson took over the business upon Pope's retirement.0 -
